If the hum is a low note continuous hum, its at 'mains' frequency. The power cables to the unit (or inside it) are getting too close to the cables that carry sound signals to the center speaker. The mains power naturally hums and if mains wires are near to audio kit wires they pick up this sound and play it through their system/speakers. Check the wires to and from it make sure the connections are good and firm. Seperate these wires by at least one inch from any power cables, use tape to hold them down and away from each other.
Disconnect the input and see if it hums in the absence of an audio source. A bad audio cable shield or unwisely-routed audio cables will allow entrance of unwanted signals from external power sources, magnetic fields, even dimmer-controlled track lights. Sometimes, simply reversing the orientation of the ac power plug can eliminate humming.
When you plugged it into your laptop, turned it on and increase the volume, do you hear only a humming sound from the speakers? Try to plug the speaker to an mp3 player as well to test if it still doesnt give out any sound. If it still doesnt, then your speaker must have a wiring connection problem inside that needs resoldering. Here I supposed that your laptop's internal speakers is working and is able to work with other audio devices like a headset or an earphone.
Hello endow1, hi, try this test, unplug you Logitech audio in plug and touch the input, you should hear a humming sound, Adjust the volume settings to high to hear it. If you cannot hear the humming sound, then there are problems you need to check. Place you speakers near your ear and adjust the volume Up and Down, you may hear a soft hum that should go up and down.
Absence of the hum means that the speaker has loose connection from amplifier to speaker driver, or loss of power, check to see if there is pilot light.
