Take the computer to a qualified connection.

Disassembling a laptop is *NOT* a job for the end-user.

Either the "knock" loosened some cables, or it damaged the disk-drive.

What can I do to get my laptop to start up rather than a continual error message and re-boot cycle?

It is looking for the operating system on the hard drive and failing to find it in the system restore area.

If it does not find it, it will look on the DVD and or flash drive.

You need to make a backup of the operating system on to a DVD or flash drive from another windows 8 computer and put it in the computer to be repaired.

DELL 5150 hard drive error 7

Error code 7 means that your hard disk drive failed and is defective. As for reloading windows XP, I wouldn't. It's not supported by Microsoft any more. I would load Win 7 after replaceing the drive.

Hello
First thing you do is to see what hard disc installed in your laptop. You can check that by checking it in your bios system. To check in your bios system first turn off your computer then press delete while your laptop is booting up. Then you will see if there is a hard disk detected in your lap top if there is a detected hard drive this means you have a problem in your windows installed in your lap top.
There is also a reason why those message appear if the first boot of your laptop is the CD/DVD ROM. Check you CD/DVD ROM if there a CD inside this may the first on to read while the laptop booting up. Remove the cd inside your CD/DVD ROM. Then restart your laptop. Check your hard disk connector it may have some loose contact thats why your laptop did not recognize the hard disc.
Hope this can help keep on touch with fixya. Hope to hear some testimonial from you. . .

MY LAP TOP MESSAGE SAYS... 1782 DISK CONTROLLER

You are getting this mess because the system is not able to detect a boot partition on the hdd or may be it is not able to detect the HDD itself.

Try to remove the HDD(hard disk) and re-seat it, Also make sure that there is no disk in the CD drive (in case the first boot device in the BIOS is set as CD drive).

Go to BIOS by pressing F10 (system setup) and check if the HDD is detected in BIOS.

Try to run a recovery by pressing F11 on first screen after power on.

Please get back for any further assistance.

As you are accessing the internet you must have another computer. If so, remove your hard drive install as slave in the other machine backup your data and reformat. If you do't have another machine maybe a friend could help.

I/O error. HP 1720n won't boot

Run diagnostics on the hard drive (Normally provided either in the F8 or F12 boot menus) and se if you get a failure.

If the drive passes diagnostics, boot to the Vista DVD and run the repair option. (Note: you may have to the Vista repair process 4 or 5 times if there are multiple errors to be resolved)
