Question about Alesis Sr 16 Stereo Drum Machine

3 Answers

I bought an Alesis SR-16 drum machine from an online seller advertised as "new". I plugged it in, and it appears that my "new" machine has had all the factory preset patterns erased! Is there a way to restore the factory patterns? I happen to have another SR-16 unit with all the presets intact. Can I download the patterns from my old unit to my new erased unit? Is there ANY way to get back the factory preset patterns on my new SR-16?

Powering up with the PLAY and ERASE buttons held down does not help. All the patterns show "EMPTY PATTERN" where the title of the pattern should be, and the machine contains no patterns whatsoever. Is there a way to get this unit back to original factory spec's with the original factory preset PATTERNS?

Powering up with the PLAY and ERASE buttons pushed does not restore the FACTORY PRESET PATTERNS. I heard mention of an internal battery. If the battery is dead, how does this affect the unit?

I already have the manual, and have perused it at length prior to coming to FIXYA. Just as well, as the link you gave me gives me a 404 error. I have heard there is a battery in the unit. Does this affect the internal PATTERNS, and what happens if it is dead?

Factory Reset

  1. Turn the power OFF to both the BRAIN and the MIDI controller (the two powered boxes).
  2. Press and hold the [Play] and the [Erase] buttons.
  3. With both buttons held down, power ON the BRAIN.
  4. Release the buttons and power on the MIDI controller.

Your unit is now back to factory default settings and should work
if you dont got the other just turn the box off,
(if you dont see what im talking about or have the other just turn off the box hold down play and erase button, then with both buttons down turn it back on. then once it starts up all the way release the play and ease button.

that power up boot should of rested everything back to the normal factory settings if anything was changed.
is a link to your product. with manuals, f&Q, specs, and a preset program chart.
you will need adobe reader from to view this

you can contact Alesis direct by:

    • How do I reinitialize my SR-16?
Power on while holding: "ERASE" and "PLAY".

Evidence: All User songs and patterns will be empty.

      Note: Clears memory

Clears the SR-16's User Songs and Patterns, but leaves the Preset Songs and Patterns intact.

i do not know about a battery on the bored, their are some other models form this company that do have batteries and they have no reset other then taking the battery out for 5 hours, but this above is how to reset this one back to factory.

    you can download
you will need adobe reader from to view this, but at the bottom of this document it says all the preset pattern tempos. not sure if that's what your looking for. you may have to go in and program them yourself. Not more I personally can help you with. Their could of been issues also with this thought you got off the internet. If you have further issues just contact alesis or the person who sold it to you.

The SR-16 has 50 preset patterns that are built in, I do not think they can be deleted, if there are no patterns the unit may be defective, even if patterns can be reinstalled using an rmidi file or re-flashing the unit.

To reset an Alesis drum machine you have to hold down both Play and Erase buttons while you power on the machine at the same time.

If that does not work, the presets are held into an rmidi file , the Rmidi file is not available for download. I think it can be purchased contacting Alesis or Rmidi.

I quote from Alesis Rmidi page:

"A rMidi Import/Export File named 'Sr16PresetKits.xml' containing the Sr16 Preset Kits has been installed within the folder named 'Sr16' within the directory in which you installed the rMidi FrameWork software. You can Import these Kits into the rMidi Drums Control if you wish. "

Check if you have the file in the folder.

If not the Sr16 will allows you to export your User Drum patterns, but I do not think you can export factory patterns.

I do not think there is any easy way to reinstall the presets.

This were originally part of the firmware, and cannot be deleted by the user.

I think that the unit is coming from defective stock, try discussing this with the seller, he may be aware of the problem.

If the internal battery is dead, it won't preserve settings. The 50 factory patterns cannot be deleted.

Call the seller and ask explanation, the unit is defective.

How to program drum beats from one alesis sr16to another alesis sr16 drum machines

5.4J Copy a Song to Another SR-16 Via MIDI
The SR-16 can send Song system exclusive information to another SR-16 via MIDI. If you have only one SR-16, you can skip this section.
1. The source SR-16 should be in Song mode and stopped. Connect the source SR-16 MIDI out to the destination SR-16 MIDI in.
2. Select the Song to be copied.
3. Press and hold the COPY button, and keep holding it down until step (5). The display says COPY TO SONG.
4. Do not enter any destination Song number-just press PLAY to send the data out over MIDI. It will end up in whatever Song number had been selected at the receiver. If the Song was not empty, the new Song steps will be appended to the existing Song steps.
5. Release the COPY and PLAY buttons.
Caution: This does not transfer Pattern information, only the song steps. To transfer Patterns to another SR-16, see section 3.3D and 3.3E.

Hopefully this helps, it comes out of the SR16 Manual, page 40 I think
Cheers Pete

The pot is PROBABLY an audio taper so check the suffix on the old one.

Many pots you can find at or

You MAY have to cut the shaft length

For an exact replacement you will probably have to go to Alesis.

4.7 K is NOT a standard value for pots. 5K ohms is.

Alesis-sr 16 sound low

Buy the correct adapter that matches the voltage AND current requirements of the unit. MANY universal ones do not and the original MAY have built in filter that universal does not.

You MAY also need to do a factory reset on the unit.

I need program settings for my sr 16

For most Alesis drum machines the best way to get programming is to find an identical unit and clone/transfer from it. Try a music store that sells Alesis.

A second possibility is to go to website(s) and download a SYSEX file to transfer via MIDI to the unit.
