Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional

1 Answer

I have an HP Media Center PC running XP Pro SP3. A few months ago it began freezing up requiring that I pull the power plug to get back into Windows. Then it would just freeze again, usually within a few minutes. It runs fine in Safe Mode. I ran anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and uninstalled or disabled all unnecessary programs and services. I tried all the recommended recovery techniques including System Restore and both versions of the built-in HP Recovery (light and re-format). Nothing seems to work. Hardware must be fine or safe mode would not work right? Any suggestions welcome.

Just unplug all external devices except ur keyboard and mouse and restart,if u still have the same problem try with last known good configuration, then also with safemode with networking, if u still have problem first of all ,in safe mode only basic required drivers are loaded,it could be a driver issue open devicemanger to chk that as well

On March 6, 2008 Microsoft released Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. Service Pack 3 contains all of the important Windows updates from previous service packs as well as additional updates that were released after Service Pack 2. To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Internet on a home desktop computer use the Windows Update feature. CAUTION: If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update). Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors . I have an Hp2133 that is running on win xp sp3 but the sound drivers are not working, an error reading 'The HD Audio bus driver is required and not found' even after the required driver has been installed.

The problem may be XP SP3. There have been a great deal of problems like this with SP3. Did you make a backup of your system before installing SP3. If so, revert back to it and see if the problem persists.

Hp dv9000 will not shut down or burna disc correctly

What error message is being 'thrown'?
If your system boots and runs take a look at the "Event Logs" on your system. They can reveal a lot of information.

Have you added any new software to your system? Have you had any "Automatic Updates"downloaded and installed? WIN XP SP3 has been known to cause a few problems. Try un-installing WIN XP SP3 and see if this helps.

Do you have a virus program and an anti-spyware program? If you do update them and run them. Let me know what happens. Binary Bob

HP Media Center Desktop w/XP

Why would you want to connect to Windows? Yecch. Go to OSNews.com and check around for an interesting OS and filesystem combination.

Still, I'd chalk it up to your having plugged another bootable volume into the machine (e.g. a CD ROM) or otherwise changing the setup from what you brought to GeekSquad. Honestly, you've described the problem circumstances quite poorly. Does it not beep before booting -any- OS?
