My Garmin 296 beeps when the power button is turned on, momentarily the login screen flashes on with no backlight then fades away in about 1 second. Nothing appears on the screen and the unit behaves as if it has shut down. Pressing the power button will repeat this activity. Have tried master reset - no good

Sending it to Garmin is not a solution as I live in Australia, it's not under warranty. What is the problem likely to be? Is there a software fix?

  • hew5 Nov 24, 2009

The battery is fully charged. It would be silly to open the device if it's a software issue which Garmin says is most likely.

Sorry, I can only give you the lowest score. Clearly you don't even know what a Garmin 296 is! Dick Smith recommended I phone Garmin and gave me the number. Garmin have been very helpful and will replace the whole unit for A$199. If you insist on saying the manufacturer is talking "utter rubbish" I suggest you get your facts straight first. For your information, the Garmin 296 is used in aviation. Your recommendation to buy a Marbella Australia A8010 is the only "utter rubbish" I can see because that is a street version of a GPS and if you don't know the difference then heaven help your customers. I think I'll just stick to the Tom Tom GPS app in my iPhone but I won't be using it to find my way to your store!

There is a GPS Repair Guide that shows you how to open a GPS device. Try replacing the battery they don't start up if the battery doesn't have a certain voltage. There is also a TomTom repair service that can do it for you.

At a guess it would appear to be a faulty battery. Being in Australia is no problem either as **** Smith Electronics can help you get this back up and running

Have a look at Altina in Australia if you decide to ditch it.

type Marbella Australia into your browser and look at A8010 or the super A860 The Dollar value against US makes these cheap now and they are 4,5 not 3.5

Please rate my help++++Thanks for using FIXYA

I reject the comment that you quote from Garmin, as utter rubbish!
The software has nothing to do with shutdown or controlling power from the battery to the display. This is controlled via the Rom chip on the motherboard. Garmin techs seem to have this bias where they make things sound simple so that one sends them the GPS and then once they have it they have you!
If indeed the battery is fully charged ( and I suggest you have that checked out by someone with a multimeter) and the unit shuts down then the chip is at fault. I suggested you took it to D Smith electronics who have a repair technician who looks after Garmin and Tom Tom. Australia is not isolated from technical repairs just because Garmin is in the US. I am also in Australia and repair service and sell GPS ( another) but I know the techs from D Smiths and they are all much more helpful and competent than the Garmin online service. With the time this has bounced around on here, with you seemingly resistant to any suggestions from us you could have taken my advice and given it to DSE and had it up and running by now. There is no software fix fror this!

If you have tried the master reset to no avail I recommend that you send your GPS in for repair. Once you open it yourself, the warranty is null and void. If it is under one year old, it is under a full warranty. If it is over a year old, Garmin will repair it for a flat rate of $296. You will have to decide whether repair or replace is the best option for you. That said, here is the link to their repair site http://www8.garmin.com/support/outofwarranty.html

Fault to its main board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ . In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.

What part do I need to fix my smart TV?

Fault to the main power supply regulator section. Either it will be on a separate board, or on the part of its main board. Check and replace damaged component/s at its main power regulator [SMPS] section circuit. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts.
http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis rather than making "Surgery" to it; which usually will make loss for both money and time. Even though you can make it right, it will cost around an amount equal to the cost of a new board; including the cost of (spare parts + service charge) More to say, most of the spare parts to it will be difficult to get from open electronic spare part market. This is true to most of the flat panel TV power supply boards; irrespective of its brand and screen size.

Gps not picking up charging, goes on for a few second and turns off! Gps screen turns blank or fades aways What do i need to do???

Hello,

Doing a soft reset on the nuvi will usually get the nuvi up and running.
If there is a reset button on the bottom, press and hold it until the nuvi powers back on. If it does not have the reset button on the bottom, slide and hold the power switch to the left for at least 10 seconds.
Also running the Garmin WebUpdater and reloading the latest update will resolve most issues.
Download and Install WebUpdater.

Hi, I have a Westinghouse 42"

The only other thing that I would think to replace on this is the power board. You may have bad power going to the main board. Other than that you may be at the point of no return on that TV.

Acer aspire 9420 sreen backlight dead

Check the luminance Tube If it is ok then check the power up circuit of tube, check flexible cable connected from motherboard to the power up circuit, check for dry solder in the circuit. But be careful, don't touch or handle the power up circut of tube while the laptop power is turn on because of step up high voltage generated in that circuit.

Cannot see screen but it turns on

Have you tried resetting the unit?

Remove the face cover (GENTLY pry it loose by the fingernail groove directly under the GARMIN logo), press the RESET button, then re-attach front cover... this is covered in the owners manual which is available online at garmin.com /support /downloads

You might try this... point a bright flashlight at the screen while it's ON, but dark... see if you can see the normal screens, but just dark. If so, you've got a LCD backlight issue. It could the backlight dimmer circuit got damaged somehow, and if a Reset dows not help, sounds like it's repair time.
