Connect an external display to the computer. If the lines and distortion shows up on the external display its the video card, which is attached to the logic board. So, the whole logic board will need to be replaced.
If the lines and distortion don't show up on the external display the issue is the LCD module, which will need to be replaced.

If you are talking about a completely black section on the display either vertically or horizontally across the whole length or width of the display.
You have a damaged display and it will need to be replaced.

This is usually symptomatic of a chafed or pinched LVDS cable, especially if the line comes and goes as you work the hinges. This not a user-replaceable part. If the line does not flicker when the hinges are moved, there is a possibility that your LCD screen itself has gone bad.

The LVDS cable or the LCD panel is faulty.Take it to the service center and get the faulty part replaced

the lcd is bad,for some strange reason this is becoming common with Imacs.I recently repaired about 30 with the same problem.The techs at apple wont say why this is hapening they prefer to replace parts.In your case you will have to replace the lcd display and the cable from the display to the logicboard and not the logicboard.

You can get a mini display port on the side to either vga or dvi out so you can hook to an external LCD and this will tell you for sure either lcd or inverter but its hard to say if its lcd or inverter but the inverter sometimes is part of the display. Do you havea serial # i can try look it up see if have inverter sep
