Yes. That's the last thing I did with my computer. However, that message kept popping up all over again whenever I press ctrl-alt-del.

Would a hard drive reformat be the final solution?

I entered chkdsk /f /r on the Run dialog. When it told me to restart my computer, I did.

Just before the black screen appeared, I saw my desktop for the last time, with some shortcuts missing and the background image all blue.

Opening Task Manager showed some program running on the background: "Personalized Settings", which failed to respond. I didn't try to end it, although I restarted once more and the black screen appeared, which contains the aforementioned prompt.

Did you use chkdsk/f ?

It might also depend on what your system was formatted to was it NTFS

Ctrl alt del is not unusual to be called after running DOS fixes, unless this is a loop

Thanks for using FIXYA

well it would be a final solution to the problem But it would depend on whether that is what you want to do.
Go into msconfig Startup and see if personal settings or Chkdsk is set to run on boot.
START RUN (type) msconfig ENTER and check startup and applications before you go to the drastic

A disk read error occurred, press ctrl+alt+del is showing when I open my laptop, please help...iTS the same problem even if i press ctrl+alt+del. thanks!

1. It is possible that your hard drive is faulty and have bad sectors or unable to read due to cable error or motherboard.
2. Try to re-seat the hard disk and if that doesn't work go to repair shop and get it checked, if problem is found ask them to recover the data if you need it and if possible.
3. Get a new hard drive.

Hello, While trying to boot up, I received the message, "disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del". The same message appears after I press ctrl+alt+del. What can I do to resolve the issue? Thank...

This is called a disk error which generally means your disk has failed. You need to get your data off it if it is not backed up. You will have to replace the disk.
A local computer shop might, just might, be able to install it into a second computer and read the data. The more you fuss with it the lower your chances of getting any data off it.
If this answers your question, I'd appreciate 4 thumbs. I do this for fun and do not get paid.

Problem with a disk read error

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.
