Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television
I strongly believe that you are having a component failing 'likely a bad capacitor' in the power supply. A capacitor is much like a battery that when it get's old it's unable to keep or hold the voltage charge it is suppose too. The discharging of the capacitor could be causing this issue. The only other issue is that you may have one of the three CRT's going. High Voltage discharge.
The only other thought is that it could even be your convergence board where the amplifiers they use is causing the problem.
Sony is great for having parts and a good TV repair like a Sony Service Center would be able to fix the problem. May cost you a bit, $200 or $300 possibly.
