Does this happen even with the computer off? Just wondering if that graphic is coming from the monitor or the computer. As a test, disconnect the cable from the computer to the monitor, at either end, and turn the monitor on. When it's disconnected you should see a self-test displaying on the monitor. It's a small box with the words Dell Self Test Feature Check, and 4 color bars, red, blue, green, and white, and will look like this: If you are seeing that, it's most likely not your monitor that is causing the problem...

I'm not sure of the exact cause of this issue but I've heard of similar problems being caused by your desktop resolution being out of sync with the resolution of your monitor.

I've read elsewhere that the problem has been fixed by Right clicking on your desktop, going to Properties & adjusting your screen resolution to something different, clicking apply...then adjusting it back to whatever you'd like.

Failing that, I'd suggest giving Dell customer support a call. They have access to a lot more diagnostic material including button combinations that may clear the error out.

You can log a ticket online with them, or call them directly. The number can be found on www.dell.com

The monitor has been locked with a password
This would have been done via WINDOWS and is almost impossible to bypass (special software)

So find out who locked you out it does n''t happen by itself!

Please rate my help++++Thanks for using WINDOWS

SOURCE: flashing padlock icon in the middle of the screen

When the icon is in the unlock position, hold down the Menu key (the far left button in the lower righht hand corner) on your monitor. This should bring up the menu. From there, you can reset the factory settings.

Padlock icon

Many monitors have an on-screen display lock (the padlock icon) that seems to get stuck.
Various suggestions in the links below - the one that seems to work most often is to hold the monitor's menu button down for 15-20 seconds to get the screen menu, then either try unlocking the OSD (On Screen Display) or do a factory reset on the monitor.

flashing amber normally just means it has gone into standby because it's not getting a valid signal, when you bought the other monitor did you use a different vga/dvi cable when you plugged it in? are both inputs the same? for more information on the padlock please read this page http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/Dell-LCD-Monitor-Flashing-Padlock-Icon/index.htm

I have a blue and white padlock keeps showing up in the middle of my screen. Blinks on and off for a while then disappears, then comes back. On and on, very irritating.

It sounds like the DELL Capslock indicator. It is a light blue square with a lock on it and a capitol A under the hasp. You may have a bad keyboard key. switch out keyboards and see what happens.
Good luck,
James.

The padlock is an indication that the On Screen Display is locked. You can also lock or unlock the OSD by pushing the Menu button for over 15 seconds.

Padlock appears on screen

I have this monitor, got it used at the goodwill, padlock problem and the control buttons (eccept for power) did not work. I tried every solution posted with no success. Then I got brave, I dove into the problem. 1) remove base, four phillips head screws. 2) remove the back, five phillips head screws. one in each corner and one behind the base mount, thus the need to remove the base. 3) carefully pry off the back, it snaps on, so take your time. I found a butter knife to be very helpfull. 4) The buttons are sodered to an electrical board whitch is snapped into place so carefully pry up from one side, again I used a butter knife. The wires are sodered to the board, they do not unplug. 5) Using a can of air, blow into each button and trying to clean out the inside them. I'm sure they should probably be replaced but we do what we can. 6) Put it all back together. 7) plug it in and connect it to computer. start working the buttons, at first I thought it was a lost cause but after about a minute I was able to get into the menue, scroll down using the arrow buttons and turn the lock off. A $300 monitor for 40 bucks. I hope this message gets to you before you give up. GOOD LUCK, GMAN8773
