Make sure its turned on and plugged in, try another port.

Dont use extension USB ports as they confuse the PC if something else is also using the port assigned to it.

How do I choose a hard drive for an upgrade?

You want to make sure you buy a Serial ATA hard drive as for storage space it depends on what you use it for. if you save a lot of pictures and other files you might want to go with a 320 gig or more. other than that if you are just looking to replace the current one and I would order a 160 gig. But make sure it is a Serial ATA when looking. I like seagate and maxtor for hard drives.

320 GIG Hard Drive now thinks it is an 80 GIG hard drive

Enter your BIOS setup and check what the BIOS sees for hard-drive. It may not be assessing the drive size correctly so you may have to force it by manually entering the data it needs to see the drive.

Computer not recognizing my Maxtor hard drive

Andrew, That Maxtor drive sounds like it has finally died on you and being just an 80 gig drive means its really old. The systems failure to read the drive as your booting up is what's causing the long boot delay as the system will see the controller board of the drive, but your spindle motor on that drive is most likely dead and there fore you will not be able to access or read any of your data stored on that drive. Hope you had backups of important files.

It seems to me that when the drive was partitioned, the whole thing was not partitioned. If using Windows XP you can go under the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management and then Disk Management. You should be able to see the drive and if any unpartitioned space is available.

The new hard drive should be showing up for you in "My Computer". If it's showing up there you can just start copying files onto it.
