I cannot get rid of the big dark rectangular band that appears across the bottom centre of the screen.

  • Anonymous Feb 14, 2008

Same problem. It disappears on channel changing for about 10 seconds then reappears. It is the same size as the menu box but contains no text. If I set the volume to zero level and hold it there, the box does not reappear.

You will need to replace your two convergence I.C.s.They are two large IC mounted on a large aluminum heat sink.Replace both, look for any burned resistors near them, replace those if needed, and readjust your convergence. Good Luck

Keyboard sticking

Replace Keyboard.

1) http://www.laptopskeyboard.com/toshiba-satellite-keyboard/2373-toshiba-satellite-m30-keyboard.html

Just an example. Search for the best price, and a reputable dealer.

2) http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba_Satellite_M35/take_apart_notebook_1.htm

A) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

B) In the Irisvista link above, click on the photo shown in Step 6.
Look at the Battery Compartment area at the top.
Note the two rubber 'feet' on each side.

The 3 screws that are circled in Red, and are to the inside of the rubber feet, should be removed. I think they hold the Keyboard Securing Strip on.

C) Follow Steps 8 through 12 on the Irisvista link above.
(You are on Page 1.
Page 1:: Page 2:: Page 3:: Find another model, is on the top of the page, and bottom of the page in White.

A note on the Keyboard Cable;

The Keyboard cable STAYS attached to the Keyboard. It removes from the motherboard's connector.

The Keyboard cable is a FFC. Flat Flex Cable. This is one general example of a Flat Flex Cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flat-Flex-Cable.jpg

The thin metal strips on the end of the cable, (Will be motherboard connector side), are contact pins.
This end of the cable slides into the motherboard connector. It is on the opposite side of the Keyboard.

Before removing the Keyboard Cable from the motherboard connector, you may wish to make a mark on one side of the cable; and a matching mark on the Same side of the motherboard connector. (Sharpee?)

Even if the cable was twisted from the factory, it MUST go back the same direction it was removed.

The motherboard connector is a type of ZIF connector.
Zero Insertion Force.
It is rectangular in shape, and is composed of two parts.
HOWEVER, it does NOT come completely apart.

The bottom piece is the larger of the two parts. It is the BODY.
The upper smaller rectangular piece is the Locking Bar.

The Locking Bar moves. The Body is stationary, and mounted to the motherboard.
The Locking Bar works on a wedge type of principle, and when it is in the locked position, it wedges the Keyboard Cable in the Body.

There are two types of Locking bar used at present, to my knowledge. I cannot discern in the Irisvista photos, as to which type is used.

1) Sliding Locking Bar;

A) Locked; or can be said as Closed,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-C650-C655/body-big/disassemble-toshiba-c655-11.jpg

B) Unlocked; or can be said as Open,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-C650-C655/body-big/disassemble-toshiba-c655-12.jpg

Here you can see the Body is White in color, and the Locking Bar is Brown.
You can also see that there are essentially two 'tabs', of the Locking bar showing; on either side of the Keyboard Cable.

One uses their thumbnails to Gently ease the Locking Bar forward; and towards the LCD screen.

The Locking Bar ONLY moves about 2mm. That is a little more than 1/16th of an Inch, or about the width of this capital O.

2) Flip Up Locking Bar;

A) Locked,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-L645D-L640D/big/laptop-disassembly-13.jpg

B) Unlocked,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-L645D-L640D/big/laptop-disassembly-14.jpg

IF, the Locking Bar is broken; and/or the hinge pins for the Locking Bar on the Body, are broken; you are looking at -
MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENT, and why I am being so detailed.

I do not have access to my Toshiba laptop Service Manuals, anymore.
According to the Irisvista link there are NO screws, that come up from the bottom of the laptop; and screw into the bottom of the Keyboard.

However I wish you to look FIRST, before trying to remove the Keyboard.
If present these screw/s will be in an area under the laptop, that corresponds with the area of the Keyboard.

Generally are in the Battery Compartment, and can be seen when the Battery is removed.
May also be situated as stated, in the area of the Keyboard.
Usually they/it will have a K next to them/it, or Keyboard, or a Keyboard symbol.

How i adjust horizontal size and vertical size

To answer your concern, all you have to do is to change the setting of your aspect ratio on your TV.

Here is my suggested way to procede:

1. Apply 1080i signal, which should produce an oversized HD image on ColorStream1or 2.
2. Select an HD channel that is broadcasting standard 4:3 image, not wide screen.
3. Switch to the Service Mode ( Please refer to the above links). In the Service mode, press channel up/down to find the Adjustment parameters needed for the following steps.

4. Adjust HIT with volume up/down control for the image height to 22.5 inches.

6. Adjust WID for image width of 30 inches, (22.5*4/3)
7. Adjust HPOS to center the image.
8. Adjust PARA and TRAP to minimize geometric distortion.
9. Switch into Convergence mode and Adjust VLIN to get equally spaced horizontal grid lines.
10. Measure the length of the central grid lines and note the number of horizontal and vertical grid lines. This information is used to create an overlay grid.
11. Create the overlay grid on 40x25 x0.003 inch clear Acetate sheet, which you can get at the Art Supply store for under $2. Draw the grid with a fine line erasable pen. Draw vertical and horizontal lines through the center of the sheet so that the lengths are the same as the central grid lines. Now draw the grid so that it has the same number of lines as the convergence grid but are equally spaced, with the outer ones at the ends of the central lines.
12. Cut off about 1/4 inch from the right side of the sheet so that the sheet can lay flat against the screen, which is slightly less than 40 inches.
13. Put a reference mark on the TV frame 2.5 inches down from the upper left side of the screen.
14. Place the overlay on the screen so that the upper edge lines up with the reference mark. The overlay sticks by electrostatic attraction.
15. Use convergence controls to remove grid distortion and converge grid colors. Refer to the Anamorphic link for details.
16. Enjoy 1080i.

Other Comments:
I didn't realize I could create the overlay grid before placing the Acetate sheet on the TV screen, until I finished drawing the grid with the sheet placed on the screen. I added grid lines as called for in the procedure. I'm sure this method took much longer no only to draw the lines but some of them were difficult to see.

Part way through the convergence procedure, I became concerned that the image width was off since I did my screen adjustment with wide screen image. Thus, I decided to repeat that step with a 4:3 screen.

I confirmed the need to press 7 often to save results since after I adjusted one grid color without it, I accidentally hit a key that switched me out of convergence mode and when I switched back, all settings were gone.

Another mistake I made was not realizing that the cursor color determines which grid gets moved.

My Toshiba 42hp83 has a rectangular area of the screen that changes colors randomly from the left-center of the screen down to the bottom. After about 20 minutes of the TV being on, the problem usually...

We had a similiar issue with our SAMSUNG Plasma TV. It had a 2'or 3" vertical bar of random colors on the right side of the screen. It would also go away but then come back. Fortunately for us the TV was still under its original 1yr manufacturers warranty. We called the customer support and they scheduled a service call. The TV repair man took our TV to the shop and replaced the defective components. It took about 3 weeks for the repair.

in the customer menu--find the closed caption settings---you will most likely find the set has been set to TEXT 1---with the remote select either CC1 or OFF---the black box was for text (books) and was not ever used much---usually someone engages it by accident
