Question about Compaq Evo N610C Notebook
You are able to use an external hard drive as your main drive but you will need to boot it at startup. If you need more help then just ask

Depending on your definition of "died" you can get a recovery cd that can boot your computer and attempt a recovery of the drive or at least your files. If the drive is dead booting from an external drive or even a usb memory stick will depend on the age of the laptop.
You will need to check the bios to see what options you have to boot from. you could replace the internal drive with a small second hand drive and use a larger external drive for storage.
