Losing power to stick/floor vacuum

Recently my canister vacuum because seems to be shorting out when I vacuum carpet floors. Each time I pull back on the vacuum, the light goes out on the vacuum head and it stops the roller brush.

thanks for the helpful advice. the contacts are pretty covered with grit/grime, and it's difficult to get anything into the small space to clean them well. any ideas? i'd rather not purchase a new wand - the machine is only two years old & i'm pretty disappointed it failed so quickly. maybe an extended warranty would have been worth it with this type of and learn.

I have the same problem -- lights dim when pulling backward and Powermte cuts out, then comes back on when pushing forward.
The contacts are not goos -- and I think I made htme worse when fileing the female contacts.

I bought the wand fuse and wiring harness from Sears -- not too expensive -- and am trying to install, Does anyone know how to safely remove the ribbon from the wand fuse-- it looks pretty fragile. would have been nice if Sears has sent along some instructions. I'll call them tomorrow

I have the same problem with my Kenmore Progressive. I was told by a tech. that it is the lead wire that is in the powermate head that connects to the wand.

If you have an extension wand, the replacement will cost about $100.00. there is a way to repair both the pwr-cord on the brush assemble and the wand, but it depends on how much damage there is. also you need to check the contacts where the wand connects with the handle, and the prongs on the handle.

let me know if you still need help

2bubbles ok here we go.. fine a small file that will fit the holes at the bottom of the wand and break the file so that the flat end fit into the wand. please make sure the wand is not plug in to anything. now put it into the hole and try to clean it out gently not too hard or you will damage the contacts. after that grab a needle nose pilers and very gently press the contacts. not a lot or it won't fit back into the power-mate. ok now for the top of the wand. if you look at the wand where the button is to extent the wand. on each side you will see a small clip. with a small flat head screw driver push into the clip at the point closer to the wand tube. it will pop out. make sure to check the clip to see how to put it back in. after both clips are out you will notice a that the clips left a gap. the back part of the wand or cover will now slip off. push it toward the gap. then up. after removing the cover. you will see a ribbon strip which is attached to the prongs or fuse .you can remove the fuse and then clean the contacts. please be careful. once this is done you then put it all together and try it out. the fuse is a part that you can buy at sears if you have to. let me know if this helps you out. if it seems like too much just take it to sears and ask them to replace the wand fuse for you instead of replacing the whole wand. hope this helps .

Check the electrical plug connections on the wand and where it plugs into on the power head. You may have to replace the wand and the power cord going into the powerhead. These connections get overheated and won't conduct very good. (Shutting off the power head before unplugging it will cut down on these kind of problems,) To order parts, go to, click on parts, put in your model number and the parts list will come up for you to order parts.

True you can clean the contacts, but I have found that even that only delays replacing the parts. The right fix is to replace them.

Sebo k3 won't vac on carpet...only hard floor

Do you mean the beater bar stops turning and then it doesn't vacuum?
Or it shuts off when you jam it full of carpet? Read the below manual:

Henry brushes seem to catch in the carpet when pulling-will the brushes soften and make it easier to use as it makes the head bounce of the floor a bit when pulling making it harder work to vacuum?

There is a "see-saw" type switch on top of the cleaning head (the part that you push across the floor). This raises and lowers the brushes according to the type of floor you are vacuuming. Move this switch to the other postion and you will find that it runs over the carpet more smoothly.

Maybe the level to carpet is too low or there is more then one belt and one is broke?

Vacuum not picking up dirt

The neck in your power head is likely clogged. Disconnect from the wand and look inside. Also check the wand.Since you have suction on the bare floor the hose is likely not blocked.

Dyson vacuum brush roll doesn't turn

The brushbar should only turn when you meet two conditions:
1) When you step on the front of the machine and pull back on the handle (recline the machine in other words)
2) The dial is set to CARPETS

The brushbar shouldn't turn at all when it is set to the BEAR FLOORS setting.

To rectify the problem - call the Dyson Helpline so that they can refer you to an authorized dealer in your area - the repair dealer will inspect the dial and figure out why the functionality seems to be switched. They'll be able to fix it for you.

Kenmore Vacuum 116.36623501 does not stay on bare floor setting

It sounds like there is something wrong with the latching assembly. GO to the Sears Parts website and enter your Model number. Look at the parts assembly for the Nozzle, and the problem will be in one of items 12 through 17.
