If you use the wrong brand of blades, they won't let the knife shut all the way. The notch is cut slightly differently. The same is true for the Kobalt knife I just bought at Lowes. Get the Stanley blades that are right next to the knives - they are the only ones that work.

Sorry.

If you bought the Stanley blades, then I don't know what the problem is. Sorry for that too.

How to open stanley fatmax knife 10-778 TO CHANGE THE BLADE. thank you

How do I change the blade on the quick change/instant change knife? Warning: Blades are sharp and can cause serious injury. Be extremely careful when handling blades. Wear eye protection and dispose of used blades properly, such as wrapping in duct tape.

FULLY EXTEND THE BLADE.

Press down and forward again on the slide button until the button is in the full front of the top slot (0 through 3 in the below picture).

Note- the blade must be extended beyond the 3rd detent position. This will cause the slide button to remain in a down position, allowing the blade release button to operate.

PRESS AND HOLD THE BLADE RELEASE BUTTON ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE KNIFE. (Step 4 in the below picture)

Note- if the blade is not fully extended beyond position 3) , the blade release button will not work.

Remove the old blade carefully.
Insert new blade.

NOW, RELEASE THE BLADE RELEASE BUTTON.
ENSURE THE BLADE IS LOCKED IN PLACE. If the blade does not retract, try carefully giving a slight tug on the blade to reseat.

Have a Stanley Fat MAx utility knife and unable to open it to load the blade

there is a little black button on the end where the blade comes out. With the blade in the out position, push in the button and pull out the blade. With button pushed insert new blade or turn the old one around to use the other end.let go of the button and you are ready to go.

I just purchased the FATMAX Utility Knife -- Looks nice, but how do I load the blades? Better yet, when I load the cartridge (finally figured that one out on my own) I can't get the blade to...

the blade section pivots to swivel when doing that it allows you access to the blade storage area that holds up to 7 blades, if the extra blades arent in place perfectly the handle won't close properly, if your problem is with the blades themselves, make sure that the slot in the blade is aligned with the holder perfectly

How do i change the blade in a stanley fatmax?

You do not have to remove any screws. Extend the blade outward using the thumb slide on top of the knife. There is a small black pushbutton on the opposite side from the lock button. Depress the button on the side and using the other hand, grab the blade with your thumb and forefinger to pull the blade out. It may require a little wiggling. Now the new blade can be slide in and locked into place. The black pushbutton controls the locking mechanism that keeps the blade from pulling out.

How do you load a new blade?

At the back end of the knive (the curved end) press the black piece through the yellow rounded part and the yellow front and the black back will part, now slide the yellow part back to reviel the blade folder. Fit new blade then refit the yellow part on top of the black part and slide the yellow part foward to lock it back in.

Just purchased a Stanley FatMax 10-778 retractable knife. Cannot figure out how to load the blade for use.

1. Make sure the side lock is unlocked.
2. Push the thumb tab all the way to the front of the blade handle.
3. Insert the blade in the opening, you may notice two notches on the top side of the blade.
4. Press the small blade release button as you slide the blade into the knife. You may have to jiggle up and down to get the two notches on the blade fully into the handle.

If properly inserted, the exposed area of the blade should look very close to an equilateral triangle.

make sure both notches of the blade are inside the handle. They notch into the thumb lever.

good luck

Stanley 10-777 utility knife: I need to reinsert the retractable blade slide back into the knife body. I try but the knife won't close.

I had the same trouble. The blade holder was out of the knife and would not go back in. I fixed it this way: open the screw knob all the way to the least tension. Slide the two parts open but not all the way- there is a tab on the blade holder that gets in the way if you try to drop it in at the fully open position. With the two halves SLIGHTLY open- slide the blade holder in making sure that the tab is seated in it's slot. Depress the thumb tab and bring it to the most forward position and the two halves should be able to be seated together again.
