Go into the customer menu with the Hitachi remote and select convergence--if red or blue are skewed and will not move in some direction or the picture looks 3D one of the two convergence chips this set uses is bad.

If it is 53SDX01B THEY WILL BE (as you look from the back of the set) towards the far right side on either one large or two smaller heat sinks with fins.

They will be black in color--about 1 1/2 wide by 1 1/2 tall and will have either the STK-392-110 OR THE STK-392-150 PRINTED ON THEM IN WHITE LETTERS.

Both chips were used----the 150 chip is a longer lasting version of the 110 chip.

To the left of them you will see about 12 resistors--take a good look and if any are discolored even slightly in the middle you can be sure of what has happened.

Most of the time only both the chips need to be replaced--the resistors around them are easy to test like testing a fuse.

Shops are going to get 300 or more for this kind of repair--considering you can buy the chips for under 15 dollars for a pair on Ebay (where I buy mine) if you or someone you know can solder and do it--you can save the set and a lot of money.

The reason the chips fail is simple--the back of them is metal and a white grease is applied to them to quickly transfer heat to the metal they are bolted to, after some years from the heat the grease dries out and one of the chips overheats and fails.

All faults can be fixed But it depends how much money you want to part with. This problem is on the convergence boiard and is not a quick fix. Manufacturers recommendations is that all three boards should be replaced at the same time. The problem may be on the sustain board but the cause of the problem can be on one of the other two. Unlike PC's playing board swap jockey is not tolrtayed in HI end Tv;s They are much more complex and require knowledge of Voltage output special tools to measure component output between each board and the ability to produce a cross hatch display to correctly aklign the "guns" when the convergence boards are fitted.
NOT A DIY job. My advice is call in a service person and save yourself from doing the replacement more than once in the month. Many on here fall afoul of the system by believing all they need to do is dwap the boards. Not so! They end up dpernding 3-4 times the cost of having it done correctly the first time by a professional.
If it has warranty ot extended warranty.. claim now
Estimated cost parts and labour $5-600

If the entire screen is curved, and it is not taking the whole screen, then you have a vertical deflection problem.

If the colors are double and do not match, with lines of different colors around pictures , then you have a convergence problem, often caused by a faulty convergence board.

The curving effect can be a side effect of bad convergence, or you may have both problems at once.

Unless you are a TV repairer yourself, better calling technical support. Usually you can ring the number listed on the owner manual.

Did you use the Automatica Convergence to try and straighten it out? If that does not help, you can manually adjust the convergence.
