I have a kenmore side by side refrigerator. the freezer section gets frosted up and ice blocks the vents. i wanted to know how to test the defrost cycle. the controls are all electronic so i can't manually turn the defrost timer into defrost mode to check to see if the heater turns on and to check if the defrost bi-metal thermostat is faulty or the timer itself is faulty. can i have some assistance with that matter? thank you. also could you tell me where i could get a repair manual for electronic control model refrigerators and freezers? thanks.

Hi, Is there ice/frost build up at the rear inside of the freezer?. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself.
This is going to be one of three problems with your refrigerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelf’s and panel in the back of the Freezer. You may see ice build up on the evaporator, don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice.
Next locate the wires for the defrost heater and using a multi-meter/ohms meter test the heater for continuity (it should read infinite) if the defrost heater is bad replace it.
This is what a typical defrost heater looks like:

If the heater is good test the defrost thermostat. This should normally be done when the evaporator is still covered with ice since it will only activate at 40f - 50f depending on the thermostat. When tested with the ohms meter at below 40f it will read infinite. It is normally clipped to the upper right of the evaporator and look something like this:
4462625.jpg The next possible problem could be the defrost timer. If you have tested the heater and thermostat and they have tested good next find the defrost timer, If your refrigerator has a mechanical one it will either be located inside the control panel in the fridge or behind the panel below the doors. Once you have located it advance the dial until you hear a click. This will initiate the defrost cycle. If your heater begins to get hot this will tell you that your timer has stalled and needs to be replaced. A typicali have a kenmore side by side refrigerator. the - f218caf.jpg timer looks like this:
f218caf.jpg If your refrigerator has a digital defrost timer you should locate the tech sheet. Normally you can find this behind the panel under the doors. It will tell you how to initiate a manual defrost cycle. As before if the heater gets hot you will have to replace the mother board normally located behind a panel at the rear of your refrigerator.
If your fridge is warm and there is no build up of frost/ice on the back panel inside the freezer then you problem is most likely going to be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours? if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over the space of an hour to see if it turns. If you don’i have a kenmore side by side refrigerator. the - a4183d8.pngrning replace the motor. This is what a typical evaporator fan looks like:

Why does The freezer side stays cold but the refrigerator side gets warm

Your problem is more than likely a defrost issue. There is ice building up in the freezer coils and when it gets blocked with ice the cold air cant blow into the fresh food section. When you shut it off the ice melts and it gets cold again for a few days. remove the freezer back panel and check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. if they check OK then check the defrost timer. It is best to replace all three components at the same time. This way you will be starting out with new components rather than one failing then the other.

Freezer gets cold, but nor refrigerator section.

Hello,

A lot of times when a freezer works but the refrig. section is warm its a problem of it not automatically defrosting so its builds up frost in the freezer so much so it restricts air flow into the fresh food section because the freezer coil is one big block of frost and no air can flow through it. THis tip i wrote covers the components of the defrost system and how to check them.

Freezer ok, fridge not cooling

That could be the motor up in the freezer is not working or it could be a defrost problem. If you see frost on the back side of the freezer that is most likely a failed defrost circuit. If you cannot hear the fan motor or possibly a fan switch mounted in the door jamb. Sometimes the drain can stop p and water puddles between the top and fresh food bottom. Forms a slab of ice and blocks the cold air from getting to the fresh food section.

The freezer works, but the ice cube maker gets frosted up, and the refrigerator barely gets cool

Make sure the fan is running in the fzr the fridge side steals air from the fzr via a small duct to the fridge. If there is a lot of frost you may have an ice block on the cooling coils in the fzr usually behind a back panel. If you have an ice block your defrost timer, heating element, defrost limit one of these could be bad. Let me know if you find an ice block or a lot of frost. good luck

Kenmore refrigerator,bottom stoped cooling.freezer works just a little bit.8 years old.bought new.

More than likely your freezer has a ice block in it it will have a lot of frost on the inside of the freezer. This ice block is usually caused by a bad timer or a bad heating element in the freezer. The timer kicks in a timed cycle to turn on the heating element and a hi heat limit keeps it from getting to hot just hot enough to melt any frost and ice. (thats how we have frost free fridges now)

The upper portion of the freezer turns off, causing the ice to melt. And the cooler side bottom drawer turns into a freezer. I can't figure out what's going on.

You have a frost blocked evaporator. Translation: The cooling coils, located behind the back wall inside the freezer section, have plugged up with frost (usually caused by a burnt out defrost heater, located at the bottom of these coils) which prevents the cold air from circulating inside the freezer, and into the top of the fresh foods section. At the same time, this blocked air flow allows very cold air at the bottom of the freezer section to migrate back into the bottom of the fresh foods section, and thus freeze item in the bottom bins of the refrigerator. Unload the freezer, take the shelves out and remove the back panel. Melt the frost with a hair blower, and change out the heater at the bottom.

Kenmore 106.536323000 S/S: Not Cooling Enough

YOU HAVE A DEFROST PROBLEM. FROST HAS BUILT UP SOMEWHERE AND THE FAN CAN'T BLOW PAST THE BLOCKAGE. OR ONLY A SMALL SECTION OF YOUR COILS IN THE FREEZER ARE COOLING DUE TO A CLOGGED FILTER OR BAD COMPRESSOR. PULL THE BACK COVER FROM INSIDE THE FREEZER AND LOOK AT THE COILS. THEY SHOULD HAVE A LIGHT FROST AVER THE ENTIRE COIL.IF IT IS A BIG BLOCK OF ICE YOU HAVE A DEFROST PROBLEM.
