Question about ASUS A7V8X-X (90-M7A690-W0EAY) Motherboard

Mobo will not post even after two cmos rom erases. Occurred after using Partition Magic OEM CD to boot from. black screen with no error messages, no beep codes just power on for ide's attached. Had XP system disc up and running well and wanted to set up a clone using Partition Magic and Acronis True Image. When problem occurred, I had the destination disk on ide#1 in slave position on cable with no drive attached to the cable end. I disabled this drive in the bios and booted from the PM CD somewhere after which I lost the mobo post entirely.

Same thing, blank, black screen. Detached every IDE device including the DVD burner/reader and still get a blank screen, no beeps. Took it into a tech and he powered it up and it booted fine for him. He still has it and is working to set up the system clones I was attempting to make when this happened. I recall that several years ago I had severe problems with Partition Magic but don't recall if I was running the program within Windows or from the CD. My guess is it was running from the CD and that mode has conflicts with the BIOS. The tech's guess on my current situation is an intermittent mobo or pwr supply problem. I'm planning on running it until I get a failure.

This problem occurred once before the fatal crash and the same situation....booting from the Partition Magic CD with primary, active HD's disabled. I erased CMOS ROM and got the system back that time but this last event killed it for me. Not sure about the soln.."use IDE #0". What would I do here??? Is that a choice from the BIOS boot menu? I don't recall that but might get brave and try it although I'll be a bit timid if my system comes back from the shop working and stable (if if ain't broke...don't 'fix it')

Got the PC back with a successfully cloned system drive. It turned out the tech used the same software I was using (Acronis True Image) so I still don't know what I was missing when I attempted to create the clone. Everything seems to work OK re: the boot process. The problem I'm now dealing with is the anti virus software was killed in the process somehow. The files are still there but it is not self-starting. Back to the shop....since I'm not wanting to fool with fishing around guessing at why this is not working nor do I want to have to re-install. I'm hoping the shop will take responsibility since it was fully functional at the point I tried to clone the drive.

Yeah it's not software related that's for sure. I'd agree with what the tech said. You might want to ask if he could also check to see if you're running the latest bios revision while he as it.

There is jumpers on the hard drive. The diagram should be on top, make sure the bootable drive is set to master and the slave set to slave.

Convert ntfs to fat32

Hi,

First of all delete the partition that you wish to convert. This is done by going into Disk Management: right click on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management, which is found under the Storage section. Right click the partition you wish to remove, and click Delete Volume This will erase the partition. Once you have done this, you must re-create the partition. This is done by right clicking on an unallocated region of a disk, and selecting Create Partition. Then click Create Logical Drive. Bear in mind that Windows cannot format a FAT32 partition that is any larger than 32GB. This is the case because FAT32 is terribly inefficient on volumes that are larger than 32GB: fragmentation becomes a serious problem.

Or you can use partition magic software to convert it.

When i start up my advent 1000 laptop the screen goes black and an error message comes up (a disk read error occurred)

If you can get CHKDSK to run, it might fix the problem. Can you boot from the installation CD? Does your system have a diagnostic partition? ( It if so, it will be an option on the early boot screen)
Finally, can your remove the disk and install it in another computer then run CHKDSK /F
Hope this information will help.
Your response is very much appreciated. Thank you for using Fixya...

This error is not the same as a cmos Checksum Error, which refers to corrupted values of the CMOS settings, the ones you set through the BIOS setup program. This error means the contents of the BIOS code itself are damaged.

Diagnosis: The BIOS ROM chip on the motherboard is probably faulty. It could also be another component on the motherboard.

You should make sure that all of the BIOS settings in the system are correct, by rebooting the system, going into BIOS setup and double-checking all the values (hopefully against a recent

If you have reset the CMOS memory you need to go into the BIOS setup screen and reconfigure the BIOS. To do that you need to press a key while the computer is booting. Usually F2 but can be other keys. It should tell you on the bottom of the first screen which key to press to enter BIOS setup.
If you don't know the settings the should be one for optimal defaults - use that one. You will also need to reset the time and date.
Save, Exit and re-boot and everything should then work.
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press delete to enter setup

How do i format my laptop off of the partition on the hard drive. I've managed to hit f 10 and get into the bios but no format option was given

Formatting the hard drive is not a function of the BIOS. You will need to boot the machine from either the Windows CD and do a fresh setup (which will give you the option to format the hard drive) or boot from a bootable CD or floppy disk that has the format command on it. From there you execute the format command and follow the directions.

Boot from your cd rom using your windows cd. Adjust your BIOS setting to boot from cd rom. Follow the instruction carefully. When partition editor screen come, break all partition and resize partition as your choice. Than install windows on drive 'C'. You r done. If you cant boot, try using another bootable cd. Let me know whats next.

I have experienced this problem as well, it is either the CD is scratch or the CD-rom lens needs cleaning, however it can read the content of the CD, I would susgest you try a another CD-rom , borrow it from a friend. It works for me.
