This refrigerator I have studied for about an hour. There are 2 possibilities. First is part number 2188819 Thermistor and the second is the control board. You did not mention any changes in the digital reading on the control panel so I think it would be worth changing the thermistor. I don't know how old your model is but the price for the control board is very high. The thermistor acts as a thermostat probe and signals to the control board what the temperature are. It's a Whirlpool part so I think that is the brand name before Sears put Kenmore on the front. If you should need me let me know. I'm even in shock at the price of the control board part number 8201660
Testimonial: "Thanks for the ideas - very detailed advice"
Click here to see the thermistor=> 2188819 The control board part number=> 8201660 no one seems to have a photo of yet. It is behind the controls panel in the fresh food section. I don't mind helping you locate the replacement of the thermistor the only trouble is when Sears change the OEM number to their number the repair books get lost too. If you need my assistance let me know here or here=> SEA BREEZE APPLIANCE PARTS at the top of the page, Thanks, Sea Breeze
OK I see you already knew about the possibilities. But many times when the control board goes bad you will see changes in the logic or the digital numbers on the control go wild or not at all (blank), Hope it's just the thermistor. I believe depending on the age of the refrigerator I would make my decision, Thanks, Sea Breeze
The thermistor is worth looking into but the control board price is too much for me, I just hope the Service Technician don't take your money. Wish I coud help you better, Sea Breeze
I was feeling bad until your rate! Thank You! Remember my site above that is the only way I am allowed to tell you where I am here, Sea Breeze

5 Second Sears repair service call suggested control panel needed to be replaced. Not sure if that is right since he didn't do much except fiddle with the temperature setting. Compressor turned off - but didn't solve freezing issue.
