NIKON D40 I can not see thru my LCD panel

The LCD panel is for menus, shooting settings, and reviewing pictures after they've been taken. The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, providing a viewfinder through which you compose your pictures. The Live View feature which lets you use your SLR as a point&shoot and hold it at the end of wobbly arms was introduced with the D300, released several years after the D40.

How to take a picture using display instead of view finder

I don't believe there is. Nikon call it Live View in other models, but its not mentioned in the D40 user manual.....

here's the full manual, if you'd like it.

Nikon d40 motnior blank while taking picture.

That's entirely correct. Live view cannot work on SLR's whilst the photo is being taken due to the requirement for the mirror and live view sensor to flip out of the way during image capture.

Live view on SLR cameras is a misleading description, it's really a live preview instead.

I have a D40 and have been able to use he LCD monitor as a view finder, somehow I lost this ability and can't seem to get it back. Any ideas. I lost it several months ago and another photographer was able...

If you were able to use the LCD monitor as a viewfinder on the D40, then there was something wrong with your camera.

The D40 does not have a Live View capability.

Use LCD instead of view finder in Nikon D40

Can't be done. Digital SLR cameras only view through the eyepiece, unless they have a "live view" function, which the D40 does not. The LCD is therefore for viewing an image after it is shot, and setting your menu options.

Taking pics

That's because the Nikon D40 does not have Live View. Up until a couple of years ago, no DSLR's had live preview, due to the design of a DSLR over a point and shoot, as it has a pentamirror arrangement that effectivly deflects the light path to the viewfinder and only to the sensor when the internal mirror is raised. Early live preview models from Olympus had the world's first Live View system by flipping the mirror so that the picture preview could be seen on the rear monitor. Most manufacturers now incorporate Live View into most of their models but most Nikon consumer models do not as yet, apart from the newly relesed D90. The D40 and D40x are two year old designs and therefore do not have the more "modern" specs of say the Olympus E520 or Canon EOS450D. Most photographers trading up from a compact to a DSLR are surprised when they cannot use the LCD monitor in the same way. However for most aspects of DSLR photography Live View is not something that is used all the time, low down shots, and macro perhaps being the most convenient use, but for general photography there is no substitute for framing through the viewfinder, that's what we've been used to doing for over half a century! Besides as pointed out previously a DSLR is often too heavy to hand hold at arms length especially with a long lens.

The camera has a mirror lock up feature for cleaning the CCD sensor. You may have engaged it. Check your manual about this function

Nikon D50 LCD Display does not work

NatD, The D50 and indeed most SLR digital cameras [ I have a D40 ] does not allow you to take pictures using the LCD display ... this is by design, you are meant to use the viewfinder and the image you see through it is straight through the lens via a mirror block [ called a reflex pentamirror or prism ]. When the mirror is down such that you can see the image in the viewfinder it is obscuring the sensor [ the bit that takes the picture ] and when you take a shot the mirror lifts and the picture is recorded. Its this reason that DSLR's dont use the LCD to shoot, however there are a few now available that do let you do this, such as olympus, new panasonic one and higher end Nikon and Canon cameras. Hope this explains it without getting too detailed!

No, the so called 'live view' ( seeing pictures in real time on your LCD monitor ) is available only on the latest models that are coming out now ( Canon D40 and Nikon D3 and D300 have this feature ).
