Are you wanting to restore your laptop to an earlier time, if so insert the "backup" disc from Toshiba and follow commands to restore to earlier time, If the disc does not boot upon startup, go into Bios and re-arrange boot sequence to boot CD first.

To restore your laptop to its previous or factory settings try using the system restore option. You can access the System Restore by navigating to Start--> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore. After opening the System Restore Tool you select this option " Restore computer to an earlier time". Then you can see the calender displaying the present month and some bold dates in it. You can go back to the month of the purchase your computer and then select one of the bold dates and click "Next". Then the system will restore and it re-starts on its own. A message will be displayed after Restoration is completed. Press "OK" . Thats it, your Computer is set in to Factory Settings. If you face any problem please let us know. HOW DO I SET MY LAPTOP BACK TO FACTORY

For (Operating Systems=windows98,xp,vista)
unless you have a custom program to do this you can only restore back using (system restore) however that will not restore it to factory settings.. the best way is simply re-installing the Operating system after Formatting your entire Harddisk space (all partitions)
If you don't know how to do it.. then simple follow the instructions after booting the windows CD
PS: to boot windowsxp cd you have to set BIOS settings (F2 or F10 or Del Button at start of computer) to boot CD before HDD..

There is no simple restore factory settings in Laptops

My husband has an e machines and has been having problems deleting certain programs and all he wants to do is restore to factory settings but he doesn't have the discs needed to do this...is there any way...

to do a system restore you would need the disks. possibly you could restore some settings but not a full restore. if it has xp and he has system restore enabled he might back up till a time the problems werent there.you would have had to have had the system restore activated befor the trouble started and it may still ahve problems there.some pc's have a backup on the hd you might try emachine support and see if this is the case here. i have fixed a few emachines just not that experienced their os.
