Water Softener maintenance tips: By-Pass Valves

There are many types of factory By-Pass valves and 3-Valve By-Passes systems used on residential water treatment equipment. Over the course of years if these valves have not been used they become very hard to turn and may require the use of a wrench to turn them. This can create a big problem if an emergency occurs with the water treatment system and the water needs to be turned off. Using a wrench on any bypass valve has the potential to break it and then it won't work or worse, you have a flood on your hands as water comes gushing out of the valve!<br />What is the solution? The easiest solution is to turn the by-pass valve on and off several time every time you add salt to the system. By doing this it loosens any debris, keeps the o-rings lubricated an the valve moving freely. <br />Many systems incorporate by-pass valves with handles that simply turn 90 degrees for on and off. While manufacturers like GE, Sears, Ecowater, Culligan, Northstar, Hague among others incorporate a simple push pull valve to by-pass the system. Other companies by-pass systems may be "hardplumbed" with a 3-Valve by-pass that incorporates an inlet, outlet and center (By-Pass) valve to divert hard water past the treatment system when needed. <br />Which ever type is used with your system it is best to turn or push these valves ON and OFF several times every time salt is added (generally quarterly) to assure proper operation of the by-pass system to prevent any problems when it is crucial for them to work properly.<br />Practice these tips and your water treatment system will give you many years of quality water with fewer service issues.<br />Good Luck and Good Water,<br />RJ<br /><br />

What does code p0446 mean on a 2001 Buick Centry?

P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction The code P0446 is set when the engine computer recognizes a fault or restriction at the vent control part of the Evaporative emission control system (EVAP). The description of the fault varies between different car manufacturers, but one thing is common, the code P0446 doesn't directly point to a defective part; some testing might be required to pinpoint the faulty component. What can cause the code P0446: - faulty vent control valve - blockage at the vent hose, vent filter or vent control valve - open or short in the vent control valve circuit - bad charcoal canister - EVAP system leak - faulty EVAP system pressure sensor - bad vacuum switching valve (VSV) - stuck open purge valve (solenoid)

Fill-trol what does do on the heating system?

How the Amtrol FILL-TROL(c) Expansion Tank System Works:
Water enters the FILL-TROL valve, pushing open the check valve, and flows into the heating system. The automatic shut-off valve is kept open by the diaphragm pressing against the pressure plate, raising the stem of the fill gate, which compresses the automatic shut-off valve spring. When the heating system reaches fill pressure, the tank's diaphragm depresses, and the automatic shut-off valve is closed.

Whenever system pressure falls below 12 psig, the automatic shut-off valve is pressed open by the diaphragm. Make-up water flows into the system to restore pressure.
    http://www.plumbersurplus.com/Prod/Amtrol-110-FILL-TROL-Expansion-Tank-4-4-Gallon-110-1/7938/Cat/219

The AMTROL FILL-TROL(c) system consists of a specially adapted EXTROL pre-pressurized, diaphragm-type expansion tank, and the FILL-TROL, a specially designed, automatic, fill valve.
    • Provides accurate system make up
    • Eliminates need for a separate, automatic fill valve
    • Fully adjustable up to a maximum working pressure of 100 psig
    • Factory pre-charged; tank pressure controls system fill

What does po440 on a 2003 saturn vue mean with a service engine soon light on

That is a problem in the evaporative emission control system.
    Could be anything causing it
Clogged filter in the charcoal canister
A leak in one of the vacuum lines
    The purge valve not working,,,etc.
The best thing is to take it and have it checked out, they might have to do a smoke test to find the problem.
All they do is inject smoke into the system, if there is a leak the smoke will come out of it. All it takes is a pin hole in these emission systems to screw it all up.

I checked the codes and one comes up its po446. i dont under stand what it mean so i cant fix it to get the light to go out.

P0446 Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit.
The following are descriptions of all Evaporative possible codes:

P0441 Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0442 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)
P0443 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit
P0444 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open
P0445 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted
P0446 Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit
P0447 Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit Open
P0448 Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit Shorted
P0449 Evaporative Emission System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit
P0450 Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch
    P0451 Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance
P0452 Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch Low
P0453 Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch High
P0454 Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch Intermittent
P0455 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (large leak)
P0456 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (very small leak)
P0457 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off)
P0458 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Low
P0459 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit High
    ---
At least the cap isn't loose for the gas tank.

I would clear the code with an OBD-II Scanner 'erase code' button, and see how long it takes for it to come back.
