Here is how to reset your 1340, 1440, or 1470:

Go to the system menu:

On the menu bar ( the top bar where it says Sytem Settings) Tap left corner twice, right corner twice, left corner once, right corner once. It will bring up a hidden menu. The first thing on the hidden menu is reset for first use. Press that and you have done the equivalent of a hard reset.

Bought the 1470 and worked great right out of the box. I charged it for about 6 hours + then decided to do the latest firmware update (ver. 2.20 release) from the website.
After the update the Magellan bootup screen just sits there forever with no way out. No menus, nothing. I tried cycling the power and reset to no avail.
I did the exact same thing with my 1440 Magellan and the update worked without a hitch. But the 1470 is either defective or a bad firmware update?
It seems to have turned into a brick after the update was ran?

Contact Magellan for this issue. There are others also who had their Magellan GPS bricked while updating it. If it's a software fault it's serious - firmware update procedures should be fault free and thoroughly tested and shouldn't go wrong.

The problem usually can't be resolved without special factory tools to re-flash the internal firmware.

if the computer will see your 1470, just run the update again...if that fails, Magellan will repair or replace any of the gps that were rendered inoperable due to one of their updates.

I downloaded the 2.20 version for my RoadMate, oh no!!!

Same thing happened to me. I downloaded the 2.20 update and it will not let me boot up the unit. It will not get past the spinning clock. I needed to go on a trip this weekend and have to use my cell phone as my gps. What a big let down.

I'm trying to install Magellan Roadmate 1470 on Windows Vista, and am totally lost! Any suggestions?

Hi there really isn't anything to install, register your GPS download the updated software I believe its version 2.2 for your model and CALL them within 30 days of purchase to see fi a map update is available.

  • If you wait till after the first 30 days you must buy any map updates.

When you connect the unit to your computer you can access the drive on it but its not like the TOMTOM's where it loads their software onto your computer.

Magellan Roadmate 1470 screen froze at spinning clock

Same thing happened to me. It was working fine yesterday, until I arrived at my destination, then it froze and when I restart it, it stops at the spinning clock. I'm so mad at myself for not researching the update and finding out that this is happening a lot!!
I don't think I have my receipt. It will be interesting to see if Magellan charges me for THEIR mistake!

My magellan 1470 has been used only 4r5 times an now every time i try to use it to put n a address it says it needs to restart to increase performance never gos to the address

I had a similar problem with the address book not working on a refurbished 1470 that Magellan sent me. I reinstalled the latest update and it fixed the problem. It doesn't take long to do and is worth a try. Make sure you read and follow all the instructions.

Tried to update the firmware on the Magellan 1470

Just got off the phone with Magellan East (my guess is India as I had a hard time understanding them and said "What?" 20 or 30 times) to which they said that there is no way to reboot these systems. I updated to 2.20 and it froze my GPS. I have to send my unit back to them and they are sending me a refurbished one free. I am outside the warranty period according to them but have AAA, which gave me an extra year on warranty, so they are honoring it. Give them a call at 8007079971 to get this fixed.

My Maestro 4350 did the same thing one time and as soon as I could see that it wasn't going to progress any further, I'd hold the power button in until it shut down then start the process over. It took several cycles, but it finally got to the point it asked if I wanted to "restore to factory settings." I answered yes and it booted right up and has been OK since. I had downloaded and installed every update that was available and feared the updates would be lost during the reset, but it took it back to the last update and preserved all my destinations. This may have been a fluke, but it worked for me and can't hurt anything.
