Question about Whirlpool 25.6 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with In-Door-Ice Dispensing System

1 Answer

Ice maker quit after my husband over filled the top shelf and blocked the air flow for the freezer. The freezer started to defrost itself and water was on the floor in front of the freezer. He unblocked the top shelf and the freezer works ok, but no water seems to be emptying into the ice maker now. Is there a fix for this without calling in a repair man?

I filled the ice maker with water like you asked, it did drop when it froze. The model number of the fridge is Whirlpool ED25PE. It's not new (by any standard) but replacing it is not an option right now.
    Thanks.

  • tinydancer_1 Nov 21, 2009

We pulled out the fridge and checked the water shoot and the plastic hose both were clear and dry. The filter hasn't been changed in a long time, I'll hunt one down to replace it, but I don't think that this is the problem (but you're the expert not me). Any suggestions to get this working again are very welcome.

The water dispenser in the door is working and has been working all along. I don't know if I confused you with my earlier post, sorry if I did. Since the water dispenser in the door is working would the suggestions you made about the bad/defective parts be relevant? Or would you have another suggestion before I purchase parts or call a repair person? I appreciate your assistance with this as I'm appliance challenged. Thanks again.

Yes, If you will try a couple things. Fill ice maker with water and let freeze. Tell me if it will drop the ice when frozen, Let me know that and your model number. I am doing this to decide which one is the problem. The ice maker or the water control valve. Sea Breeze

Good morning tinydancer_1, Have to love that user name!

OK so explain again , sorry just got up. You are not getting water up the hose on back to ice maker? If someone has a multi-meter we could OHM the 2 coils and test for power at the coil for the dispenser for voltage. Thank you very much for the rate! I'm trying pick up where we left off. I'm here or at my forum. I will study this in the background as I wait for your response. Again Thanks, Sea Breeze

As long as the temperature inside the freezer the ice maker should have dumped the cubes from their slots and attempted a refill of water. You mentioned also you had no water supply also at the dispenser this morning. The issue with the ice maker is going to be a little different that than the dispenser water problem. The water filters should be changed every 6 months depending on use. They will begin a slowing down of flow but you should never get to that point. The ice maker that your model refrigerator has is part number=> 4317943 and what would stop the ice maker from cycling is the thermostat inside that tells the heating element to come on first below the ice maker to loosen the cubes and then the rake or arms begin their cycle of about 6 stages. Once the cubes are out the rake end up where it began and the ice maker tells the water valve to open for about 7.5 seconds. I believe we have a couple of problems going on here. Need to find any thing that may be stopping water to the refrigerator where the water supply comes to back of refrigerator. Even if you need to turn it off at its source long enough to disconnect and let it flow freely into a pan. If you have the older style piercing valve type shut off then rust and scale can block flow. You either have a crimped or blocked water line before the dual water valve or the dual water control valve part number=> 2206123 Dual Water Control Valve is defective too. I will be here or there as I wait to hear from you Thanks, Sea Breeze

As long as the temperature inside the freezer is below 5 degrees. Was what I tried to say.

Tinydancer_1 I think what is confusing is the valves come as a set of two coils or three and one side fills the dispenser and the other side refills the ice maker once dumped the ice maker arms come around to where you see most of the time and the ice maker tells the water control valve to open for about 7.5 seconds. If the vave for the ice maker side is defective and will not open the dispenser will continue to work until it becomes defective or until the day the refrigerator is no longer useful. Your valve has 3 sets of connections. Like in the photo below. The ice maker checked out OK now the valve is what that test points to.

If you have more questions or need answers I will be where I told you before. Was busy last 2 days going through a Samsung Refrigerator On-line and on the phone. On photo above I will assume the brown set will be your ice maker, blue the dispenser and the other may be the main. Sorry I did not get back sooner, Sea Breeze

My Samsung Refrigerator side by side door ,,Model,,SRS583DHD,, left hand side door ice maker increases temp and not producing ice,,;-(,,Bot

Your description sounds like a loss of air flow problem. Check for overloading your freezer and fresh food side. In order for the freezer and fresh food side to work properly, the air vents need adequate room for air to circulate. I had a customer who completey filled the middle shelf with cardboard boxes and completely blocked air flow on the middle shelf The lower level near the evaporator was extremely cold and the upper area was room temperature in the freezer. Each shelf needs about an inch of room at the back and room between packaging to allow air to circulate.
Hope this helps

Lsc27914st/00 ice maker will not fill the tray, prior to that is the water leaked down the walls of the freezer

Hello KYMBERLY;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

There is a white plastic fill tube that runs from the back of your refrigerator into your freezer. This fill tube in the freezer section is open at the top. This tube goes into the ice maker fill cup on the right hand side of your ice maker. Opening and closing the freezer door - warm air gets in, forms condensate, and freezes. So, your fill tube and/or your fill tube is blocked with ice.

Remove the extra storage shelf in front of the ice maker. Using a hair dryer defrost the ice in the fill cup and fill tube. This is located on the right hand side of you icemaker.

Ice Maker WR30X0327 Freezing Over I have an

We have extremely hard water in the East Mountains of NM. Our refrigerator Ice Makers only lasted about a year before the Calcium from the underground Calcium just killed them. I solved the problem by buying, from ebay, a small restaurant ice-maker. I Always fill it with filtered water, and it has been chugging away for years. Our water tested Harder than an Hot-tub maker had ever seen, even after going through our old, Sears, water-filter. Ergo - how hard is your water? Could that be the problem. Just a thought.

Model #970658324 leaking water from the freezer to top shelf of frig once a week probably with defrost cycle. Help!

more than likely you have a clogged drain. This occurs when the machine goes into defrost and the melted ice somehow is prevented from draining and therefor refreezing and blocking the drain for the next defrost cycle. Over time it gradually builds and starts voer a larger area. Being you have a top mount refrigerator(freezer on top) there are air ways that connect the freezer to the fridege, which is how its cooled. The best way to resolve this is to unplug the machine for atleast 24-48 hours to let all ice melt
If thats not an option that you want to use the actual repair method would be to 1) unplug the machine 2) empty everything out of the freezer so you'll have room to work 3) take all the shelving and baskets out 4) locate the screws on the rear wall inside the freezer and remove them 5) take the back panel off exposing the evaporator coils ( the aluminum ) 6) directly below the coils is a trough of sorts and the drain is usually in the middle and runs out the bottom, remove the ice by carefully chipping it out or by using a hair dryer or hot water. 7) once all the ice is gone, the drain is visible and water can flow smnoothly down the drain dry the area and reassemble.

Ice maker just stopped making ice. had no problem up to a complete stop

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

First off make sure the water in door still works. If it does not work suspect the door / light switch.
Next make sure the freezer temp is below 16 Deg F. The ice maker has a thermostat that starts the ice harvest / fill cycle and if the freezer is warming up because of automatic defrosting problems (Ice build up on the evaporator coils) the ice maker will never cycle. If you note an ice build up in the back of the freezer compartment or poor air flow from the evaporator fan you have an automatic defrosting problem. If the fan is not running at full speed the bearings or windings on the evaporator fan are failing and there is not enough air flow to get the freezer to @ or Below 16 F.

Check to make sure the evaporator fan in the freezer and the condenser fan in the rear bottom of the unit are running un-obstructed. (clean as necessary.... but if the front of the cabinet is hot to the touch then the condenser coils my be clogged with lint or... the condenser fan is not running full speed.

The ice maker may be cycling but it may not be filling with water. If it is cycling but your not getting any water.... at all the prime suspect is the solenoid on the inlet water valve. The water valve is not repairable.

Make sure that the rubber fill tube on the back of ice maker is not blocked with ice... squeeze the end of the tube. If it is frozen with ice... the inlet water valve is bypassing water off cycle and causing the tube to freeze up. The only remedy for this is to replace the inlet water valve.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Freezer is very cold but fridge area is warm. what is up.

Sometimes the defrost drain pan stops up. Instead of the water goin outside is pools up between the compartments. This forms a slab of ice and blocks the air flow from freezer to fresh food. Of course the other thing that comes to mind is the freezer fan could have quit or stopped due to an ice buildup.

Water on the top shelf of the refrigerator

Your defrost drain is clogged and now the defrost drain trough has filled with ice causing the water from your defrost cycles to flow into the fresh food section. You will need to clear all ice form thr drain area and this is done thru the freezer wall and some models also have a removable bottom panel in the freezer that has to come out also to get to the drain. You can do this it will just take a little time. About an hour for a first timer with little experience. Good luck and hope this helps

Freezer will not keep foods frozen fridge will not keeep temp.

Sounds like a main control board problem keeping the freezer fan from working . If no air flow to the top of the freezer , the icemaker will stop working and the ice will begin to melt ( leaking from freezer ) . The coils will start to freeze up due to no air flow across them . If continued for a period of time , the cold air could return thru the return vent located in the bottom of the ref/freezer section and freeze the water tank in the refrig section , causing the no water thru dispensor .

Kenmore elite 596 73503201 no cooling in top compartment

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.
