A dimmer is a variable resistor, the best thing you can do before replacing any parts is to, check your bulbs and make sure they are not over rated for the amount of wattage required for that circuit or fixture.
ie: If the fixture calls for a 100W and you are using a 150-175W.
If this is not the case, replace the dimmer and you should be just fine.
