It would be useful to know what kind of camera you are using.
However, I can suggest that you need to use a slower shutterspeed. My guess is that the shutter is traveling at a speed which causes the shutter opening to travel as a ****. When the flash goes off, only the section of film not covered by the shutterblads is eposed.
