Question about LG DLE2532W Electric Dryer

1 Answer

My LG front load dryer has a cracked stainless steel drum and is less than 3 years old. I purchased it new at Best Buy and it is out of warranty. Is this an inherent problem with this appliance? If so, is the company liable for repairs? It also doesn't dry very well anymore. I checked the heater coil and vent and they seem to be fine. This was an expensive investment!

How to repair stainless steel on a dryer drum

For my Frigidaire manufactured Kenmore dryer, the stainless steel drum is part ordinary painted steel (front flange). That flange is part of the suspension for the drum. The flange rides on a nylon wear pad above the door. On both sides of the pad, there is a felt that is glued to the dryer front panel to act as a seal. What happens is that the paint on the ordinary steel flange rubs through and rusts, staining clothes during the drying cycle. I have to replace the nylon pad and felts every few years to combat the rusting issue. The felt and nylong pad assembly is glued to the cabinet flange using heat resistant adhesive.

Dryer makes a thumping sound with or without anything in it

Look for a crack in the seam, where the stainless steel drum is welded together, either at the front or back edge of the drum. If weld is cracked, replace drum.

With my dryer which still dries well. I get a load thumping noise on its rotation even with no items in the dryer. What would be the fix for that

Look at the inside of the drum, at the seam. At the front or rear side you will probably find a crack in the stainless steel weld. The fix is to replace the drum.

WE HAVE HAD THE LG DLE2532W DRYER JUST OVER THREE YEARS. RECENTLY, WE HAD TO REPLACE THE DRUM BECAUSE IT HAD A CRACK IN IT. NOW THE REPLACEMNT DRUM (FOUR MONTHS OLD) HAS A CRACK IN IT AND THE DRYER IS NOT...

Here's one place you can order a new drum. However, if the drum has cracked twice in four months you need to find out if there's something else with the dryer that's making the drum crack. You also need to think if you're doing something like putting shoes in there or something that's stressful on the dryer.

Maytag Neptune gas dryer with cracked drum

Not sure what the cost of a new drum is, but yesterday I fixed one. I took a chance and bought one of these dryers with a crack for $70 on Craig's list. Not an easy job, but if your handy, know what your doing, and have the tools you can get the job done in about 3 hrs. Here's how:

Disconnect the dryer and move it to a space where you have plenty of room to work. Remove the drum belt from the motor, noting how the belt goes through the belt tentioner and motor. The drum comes out the front, once the front is removed. Be gentle and you'll have the drum out in less than 30 minutes. Be very careful with all wiring and connectors. Gently remove the felt edging at least 8 to 12 inches away from the crack. It is glued to the drum. Use some duct tape from the opposite side of the drum to hold it way from the crack. Next position the crack together as closely as you can, and hold it together with a set of vice-grips on the outermost edge. Using an ACETYLENE torch (not normal propane) and brass brazing rod with flux start near the inside/center of the drum and work your way out toward the edge. Take your time, use lots of heat, and make sure the brazing sticks. I rested my drum on a metal trash barrel so it was up in the air and I could braze it comfortably. Next find a piece of stainless steel. I used a hose clamp. Verify it's truly stainless by seeing if it sticks to a magnet. A stainless should just barely attach. Very few hose clams are truly stainless. You can also use a piece of old kitchen sink, or cut a piece off a stainless dog bowl, moulding, etc. I cut off the end on the hose clamp, and positioned the strap of the clamp on the outside of the drum, perpendicular to the crack about 1 inch in from the edge. I used a clamp to hold it in place. I then brazed each end of the hose clamp. Then remove the c-clamp, and do along the hose clamp to add strength to the area so it does not open up again. After your done, brazing, go back and take some time to really clean up the outside of the drum with a grinder. The drum rotates on rubber wheels which run along the outside of the drum. If you did this right the drum wheels will NOT pass over the hose clamp, but only pass over a small amount of brazing over the actual crack. This takes some skill to accomplish, but the brass brazing will never leave rust marks on the clothes. When I ran the dryer empty you could mildly hear a bump as the wheels passed over the brazing. However with a full load you don't even hear it at all. Got home with the dryer at 4:45, and had it done by 7:45. It may break again in 6 months some where else...but for now it works like a charm.

Front load washer loud noise and drum loose but not dropped

Spider arms attached to stainless steel drum inside of tub have probably broken. This is a known problem with Frigidaire front loading washing machines. The stainless steel drum has a 25 year warranty but this does not include the spider arms. You cannot buy the spider arms separately, you have to buy the unit as one. The drum cost about $250.00 and probably about $300.00 in labor to install. You can do it yourself but it is pretty involved. Good Luck!

Maytag Dryer MDG9700AWW has split into the metal drum at the seam

I'd say take the 50% off offer. Dryer drums are very thin, and a weld would most likely still make a thump noise every time it passed the drum supports. (two thumps per revolution) I've seen this on other brands which use thin stainless steel drums. (I didn't look up your model to see if the drum was SS or powder coated metal, or galvanized, or whatever) It is not a real common thing, but certainly not unheard of. I'd say it was indeed a poor weld, but the manufacturer's generally won't help much once it makes it past the warranty period. Don't bother rating this, as anything but a FixYa lowers my rating. Thanks.

LG DRYER MAKING CLUNKING NOISE

Look inside the drum at the seam, front and back side. The weld on the stainless steel drum may have cracked. You would need to replace part number 3045EL1002F. It is moderatly difficult to replace.

Remove couple of screws from the top rear and slide back the top cover. You will see the drum. Slowly turn the drum and feel the drum knocks. Then turn it slowly until the knocking part comes on the top. Check for crack along the welded joint. If it is cracked, change it asap because it can damage the roller also. Call LG for part number and dealer information. If you are technical, you can replace it.
Have fun.
