Question about Hunter Designer's Choice 5-Switchblades Lg Room ceiling fan by Fan

2 Answers

I have a new Hunter ceiling fan and I believe I have the black and white wires connected properly. There is a blue wire that is for the lighting kit and it instructions said to put the blue and black together. I did this. The light works OK. The fan motor sounds like it is trying to run but it isn't. HELP Guy Selsor gbs648@yahoo.com

    Hello:
There is no dimmer switch and no appliances are on that breaker. The only thing on that circuit is a TIVO unit.
    Any other suggestions?

Unhook the blue wire to see if the fan will run correctly. If it does, then there is a wire problem with the light kit.If it does not, help the problem, then the fan is defective.

Hello. i can assist you. the "hot" wires are the black and the blue. the white is neutral. The fact that the fan motor is trying to run but isn't running is not a good sign. If you have the fan motor on a dimmer switch that could be the problem. Also it could be that the voltage is already being consumed by other lights, appliances etc.
Lets talk about the available power. Chances are that the power coming to your fan switch is coming from a 15 amp circuit controlled by a breaker or a switch. In a perfect world, a 15 amp circuit offers 1500 watts of power. Where we would run into a problem is if that circuit already had other draws on it. for example a microwave alone could use 1100-1500 watts all by itself. Also, not all houses are getting the full voltage one would expect, a problem known as a voltage drop.
I recommend that you determine what else is on the circuit that you are using for the fan. If you discover that you have other serious power users, redistribute where these things are plugged in if possible.
Also, you could temporarily wire the fan directly to an outlet using a piece of 14/2 wire to see if it runs ok without going through that switch.

The problem is not your remote on the fan. It is the light kit. We have the same problem and our electrician diagnosed it as the light kit. This problem started just out of warranty, of course, and we are now purchasing a new light kit to fix the problem.

Wiring diagram for harbor breeze celing fan

The colors of the wires in the Harbor Breeze ceiling fan kits tell you what their functions are. The black wire is hot for the fan, the white is a common wire for both the fan and the light kit, green is ground and blue is hot for the light kit. locate the black and blue wires from the ceiling fan and connect them to the black wire inside the electrical junction box by twisting an orange wire connector onto all three wires. Locate the white wire from the ceiling fan and the white wire from the junction box and attach the two wires together with a wire connector. Connect the bare copper wire onto the green wire from the ceiling fan mounting bracket by twisting an orange wire connector onto the two wires. Push all wiring inside the electrical box. good-day !

Does the blue wires connect to the black or white wires? I cannot find the instruction booklet. Thanks

Hi, At the fan you'll have a black wire, blue wire, green wire and white wire.
In the ceiling you'll have a black wire, a white wire, and a bare copper wire. If you are using the same wall switch to turn on all of the power to the fan AND the light, connect as follows:
White at ceiling to white from fan
Black at ceiling to black and blue together from fan.
Bare copper wire at ceiling to green wire from fan.

When connected like this, the main power is from the switch, and the fan and light may be set by the pull switches on the fan.
Best regards, --W/D-- Please feel free to rate this solution... thanx!

Fan light kit will not function

Have you taken a VOM (Volt-Ohm Meter) and checked to see that the "two wires" of which you speak actually have 110-120VAC on them?

I bet they don't and I bet they don't because "up top" (where the connections in from the ceiling box, the BLUE wire (might be brown on some fans) is not hooked up. Unless you have separate switches at the wall, the blue and black wires coming out of the fan must be combined and hooked to the BLACK wire coming out of the ceiling box. White (neutral) goes to white, and green goes to ground.

Good luck, and always OBSERVE practicable safety precautions.

Replacing old fan with Hunter 20763.

People find all kinds of creative ways to wire things. White wires are always supposed to be neutrals and therefore should always go with other white wires, and colored wires should always be hot and should always go with other colored wires. If you have a voltage tester you could test to see if in fact the blue wire is actually the hot and the white is actually the neutral. (test each wire to a ground). If the previous fan was wired backwards, it would not affect the operation of the fan or lights at all. But you'd probably want to make sure the new fan was wired properly. In that case connect the white from the fan to the neutral and the black and black/white to the hot.
