Netgear Wireless Print Server WGPS606 won't install correctly

I have a Windows XP desktop and Windows Vista laptop that we want to print to a Canon MultiPass 730 printer/scanner/fax with a WGPS606. Can't even get through the install...we've spent days (literally) with insufficient instructions from the manuf., and little web site reference on how to accomplish this.

Re: Netgear Wireless Print Server WGPS606 won't install...

I finally got my WGPS606 installed - unfortunately, it's just on one computer so far, but that computer is on the network and is not wired. Here are a few tips:

1. hold the reset button (little pinhole) until you see some action going on with the lights (I forget exactly what happened, but after a while there was a change) - this served to "reset" my WGPS606's IP Address, which I had changed during setup.

2. connect your computer to the server with an ethernet cable and type in (the default IP Address of the server)

3. login with the default username and password:
username: admin
password: password

4. once logged in, you will see all of the WGPS606's information. At that point, you should be able to change the IP Address of the server to what you want it to be, but I think you can proceed to run the setup on the installation CD (or the installation program from the WGPS606's Netgear website) and it should be recognized on the wireless network.

In my case, I want to mention that when the initial setup failed for me, I used the MAC address on the back of the server. After steps 1-4, my server was finally on the wireless network by the installation program, however, the MAC address was 1 digit off from what was on the server. The MAC address on the back of the server was the PHYSICAL MAC address, whereas the WIRELESS MAC address was one digit higher (last set of numbers. For instance, on the back of the server, the MAC address ended in ":01" and I found out that this was the physical MAC address. The wireless MAC address was exactly the same, except the last 2 digits were ":02."

Another thing to note was that after the server was recognized, it told me to reserve a specific IP Address other than what I had previously set - I didn't realize that it chose it for you. Anyway, just keep that in mind. After this, everything worked like a charm - well, I have yet to set up the other computers to connect to the server, but at least I have one!

Hope this helps!

Re: Netgear Wireless Print Server WGPS606 won't install...

My laptop computer with Windows Vista OS could find the printer server but I still could no print although I had disabled window's firewall. Later, I found there was a personal firewall setup from the anti-virus software. After uninstalled the personal firewall, I could print through the WGPS606 printer server without any problem.

Re: Netgear Wireless Print Server WGPS606 won't install...

I had to turn windows firewall off during installation in order for the set up software to find the print server.

Computer can's see Print Server in Add Printer Wizard The WGPS606 installation -- part 1 -- seemed to go fine. It sees our wireless network, we assigned it an IP address, it sees the printer connected to...

Make sure the printer has been connected locally first and that the print drivers have been installed. This should then allow you to add the printer via the set up.

Hi there, can I use the WGPS606 as an AP ? Many Thanks

I understand that you want to use the print server WGPS606 as an access point. Regarding the concern, please note that it is not possible to configure or use this device as AP. This device however can act as as wireless bridge. It can connect wirelessly to the wireless network of your wireless router/ap and provide wired connection.

    Hope this helps.

    WGPS606 does not like printers

Hi, visit the link below to check the compatibility list of this print server. If your printer is not listed then it means that it has not been tested with this print server and there is equal chances for its nonfunctioning with the print server.

Perhaps an ip conflict. If so, assign server an ip outside of normal client range.

My wGPS606 wont print on my Windows Vista laptop!

I just found a way to enable the HP P1006 with a different print server (Liveprint on Orange Livebox router). Perhaps this might work with the WGPS606 wireless print server?

I set up the P1006 via the print server as instructed (I'm using Vista 32 Home Premium) but no test page would print.

BUT!! (with thanks to another another forum):

I selected printers, then right-clicked on the wireless printer I'd just installed and selected 'properties'.

Under the 'Ports' tab I deselected 'Enable bidirectional support'.

    Problem solved.

    Hope this helps.

let me inform you that this printer is not compatible with any wireless print server. The drawback is that it is not possible to network such printers. A printer needs a steady flow of data, which is easily accomplished when it is connected directly to a PC, but cannot be guaranteed when the printer is connected via a LAN. Also, these technologies require intensive handshaking between the driver and the printer.
The host-based software uses the computer's resources to process print commands and rasterizing data, taking advantage of the computer's memory and processing power."

Sorry I can't be more upbeat - but its probably useful to know that someone at HP thinks the job's imposible - unless someone out there has a fix?

Installation assistant cannot detect print server

Results of attempting to connect the Netgear Wireless Print Server WGPS606 and the Canon MF6550 multifunction laser printer. I was on the phone for several hours last evening (March 9, until about midnight EDT) with a very competent support agent from Netgear (actually in the Philippines). The Netgear setup Wizard software would not connect the Print Server to my Verizon FiOS wireless G router automatically, so the Netgear support agent walked me through it manually. The Print Server connected that way, for sure. Then we manually attempted to connect the Print Server to my Canon MF6550 and subsequently, my HP 932C Deskjet. Neither printer is on the WGPS606 compatible list, nor is either on the known incompatible list. Now we know - both printers are INCOMPATIBLE with the Netgear WGPS606. I bought both the Netgear Print Server and the Canon MF6550 at Staples on Sat., March 8, 2008, based upon the assurance from Staples staff that it would all work. The question now is whether ANY brand of wireless Print Server will work with the Canon MF6550, or do I have to return this printer and get either a Canon with built in networking (ethernet or wireless) or switch to the Brother equivalent (MFC 8870DW). If I get a (multi-function) printer with built-in Ethernet networking, does the Ethernet capability bypass the USB incompatibility problem, or will the problem remain?
