Take a look at the firewire port on the camera, you should see four "pins" for lack of a better word. On mine, one of them was bent and I had to use a fine needle to bend it back in place, then presto everything works

SOURCE: repair firewire Sony HDR-HC3

I have a HDR-HC3 and I had the same problem too... This model has ALOT of problems with transferring files and I need to pay $90 to get it repaired... Try it on a Mac, if iMovie cant pick it up it means you have a firewire problem.

SOURCE: windows won't recognize my sony dcr-trv19

Need a 1394 firewire port and suitable software like Corel Videostudio. Then no problems. When no 1394 port thoes pci cards come cheap, $15 or so. Video studio retails about $100 I think, you can download a free limited 30 day trial from Corel. Please uninstaal that demo after 30 days with the same install programm otherwise deep ****.

SOURCE: sony hdr-cx7 image jitters when the cam gets hot

one fix is turning off steadyshot then try putting the camcorder upright(the lens pointing up) for few second until you see the video stabilize, then use as normal but the camcorder will jitter again if handle it roughly. This is just a workaround, i still dont know why it happens, need to send it for repair soon.

I searched under HDR-HC3 firewire driver and got the above link.

It says the following:

Hi..

The problem was a missing MSDV.SYS file.

Thanks
D.

Actually, on the Sony site it says that no additional drivers are required to connect the camera in Windows XP, Vista, or 7.

But, the user of this camera and firewire noted that he was having trouble convincing windows of this.

Another link that talks about the firewire problem follows:

You can find more links by searching under 'HDR-HC3 firewire driver' or related searches to find the solution to your problem.

I hope this helps.

Window 7 problem cannot detect my video cam

After connecting the Camcorder to the Computer with the Firewire/i.LINK, turn ON the Camcorder.
Keep the Camcorder in Playback mode.
Start the Moviemaker Software which is pre-installed in the Windows.
Check whether the Camcorder is recognized as the Video Device.

If the Camcorder is not recognized, then check whether it works with other Computer or not.
You may also try using a different i.LINK cable that is compatible with the Sony Camcorder.
Sony Camcorder have 4 pin DV Interface and the Computers may have either 4pin or 6-pin i.LINK/Firewire port. So make sure that you are using the correct cable.

Go to manufacture's website. Find the download or support tab. Then look for the very latest drivers for your camera. Then download onto pc, double-click to extract and install the driver, then restart pc, Then turn on camera first, then start any programs you are using, then finally connect with usb/i-link/HD cable.

When pc doesn't recognize a device, it is due to the driver.

PC with Windows XP will not recognize DCR-HC96 Handycam, and I don't have the software disk that came with the camera. Help

Option 1:

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camera to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

(Applicable for Windows XP Operating System only):

As you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software disk with the Computer.

Check this Link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C222820

As you do not have the supplied Software disk then I suggest that you use the i.LINK cable to transfer the video. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port.

An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The i.LINK cable is an optional accessory for the Camcorder. You require to purchase either a 4 - pin to 4 - pin or a 4 - pin to 6 - pin i.LINK / Firewire cable depending on the number of pins on the i.LINK / Firewire port of your Computer (since Camcorder will have only 4PIN i-LINK, while the Computer may have a 4PIN or 6 PIN i.LINK port).

You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire interface.

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.

Refer this Link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

What is the docking station for?

a usb cable will work... the docking stations are handy as you just put the camera/camcorder into the docking station ... no extra cord... often has the charger built in as well
