You may try to gently force it open as something may have gotten on the lens cover itself 'pop/derbies' thinking out loud or if you have accidently dropped it on it's cover there may be an obstruction or bent lens which may be preventing it from opening.
Better to force it open and keep it open that have it stuck closed.
By the way if it's still under warranty. Take it or send it in right away so they can fix it for free. You may pay some gas money or shipping but hey it will be fixed.

The lens cover does not open. Everything else seems to work fine. Tried new batteries, etc. Any ideas? Thanks!

Try to look for dirt in the shutter cover which is preventing the mechanism to work. Sometimes sand can get entrapped into or even if you had visited the sea side, possible salt/sand can get clogged into. Use a good jet air spray very carefully so that we can assume it be a mechanical jamming. Otherwise the shutter motor drive can be faulty and will need some experienced pair of hand to open and check. zBut try the first part, hope I could help. Good day

This camera will most likely need a firmware upgrade. You can send it in and have the company repair it for $50. That is what I recommend doing. Otherwise you may have to dismantle entire camera and spray with a can of air duster. You may get lucky enough to just clean it, but there is slight chance it messed up the firmware and it will need to be upgraded or reprogrammed

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Dropped my camera w/lens out

I have also dropped my Panasonic dmc-lz3, I managed to get the lens to function again by gently pulling on it several times while activating the zoom lever. I hope this works for you.

Lens cover won't open

Hi,
You should look for "lens cover mechanism" when open camera front cover. This part has defective gears or misaligned some thing internally. Part detail is as under for Sony DCR-DVD653E model.

( 1-787-236-11 ) MOTOR UNIT (LENS BARRIER)

You can have an idea of this part in below exploded view... I hope these info will be useful.

Lens cover is stuck half way open on Lumix DMC-TZ3

argh! me, too! i love this camera, but the lens cover is just plain stupid. we used the camera at the beach for a couple days, and i could tell a grain of sand got stuck behind the lens cover. now it is jammed and the camera is totally out of commission. why make a camera built for outdoor conditions, then put a lens cover like that on it!! i can't find a tech who can fix it, either. went to three shops in NYC and all said the cost to deal with it would pretty much buy me a new one... ! :(

Panasonic DMC-LZ3 upgrade

Unlike some of Panasonic's other models in the DMC category, the LZ3 does not include a microphone (the little "dimple" on the top is where it would be).

In other words, even if the software could be upgraded the hardware does not support audio recording.

I'm sorry but this is a serious problem. The lens assembly is proabably busted. If you plan to take the camera to a service center be shure you ask the people there for a price estimate over the repair, before they actually do something to the camera. This repair can cost $70-100 or even more. In most cases the lens assembly can't be repaired and needs to be changed.
