Connecting Gateway 450 notebook to tv using vga to svideo convert

I'm trying to connect my gateway 450 notebook to my tv. I bought a vga to svideo converter. I just don't know if my video card is even set up to do this, or what I'm doing wrong. I restart my computer and have the right input on my TV set up but it's not transferring. Help please...

Thanks,
Patrick Brown

It is possible that the signal from the portable is not compatible with your convertor or device, however, if you are getting no image at all (not even lines etc.) then the laptop may not be set to send a signal through the VGA port at all.
To toggle the image to the VGA port do the following

  • Press and hold the FN key on your keyboard
  • While holding the FN key, press the F3 key one time
  • Let go of the FN key
  • Wait a few seconds to see if you get anything thing on your external device.
  • If you do not then press FN-F3 a couple more time waiting a few second in between each try.
the Fn-F3 toggle switched between the LCD only, LCD+CRT, and CRT only modes. You may find that it works on the CRT only mode but does not work correctlly with both. When this occurs it's a limitation between the compatibility of the settings requires for both screens, so you would only be able to use each by themselves not together.

Try using a VGA to VGA cable or a dvi to dvi cable because dvi-d and hdmi tend to lack the necessary pins to be converted to an analogue signal. A hdmi to dvi cable may also work

Can't connect to pc

How are you trying to connect to the PC? Does your video card support TV-out?

If you are trying to connect VGA to component video, you need a converter like this: http://www.svideo.com/pctocomponent.html . There are similar ones for PC to composite video. The VGA to component video cables will not work since the two signal formats are different.

Some video cards do have a TV-out option, you will need to read the documentation to set up that option. (Those cards come with a special dongle to connect the card to the TV cable.)

If you have the converter and are not getting the signal to the TV, first check that the computer video is set to use the external monitor. (This may need to be enabled in the BIOS.) Next check that the converter is working. (Try connecting to a different TV or this TV to another computer.) Try different cables and make sure that they are fully seated to all three devices. Replace the converter if you find that it has failed. (If it is under warranty, send it to the manufacturer.)

I hope this helps.

Not without a converter box to go from vga to svideo or composite.

Connecting Dell Inspiron 1501 to TV, Windows Vista

The PC card you have doesnt appear to work with that adaptor. Dell Has its own Svideo / Video output adaptors.

You need a converter not an adaptor. Try looking on Amazon for this: ITV-900 PC to TV Converter

Can I connect my dell latitude d360 laptop to my tv?

you need to have the same connections on both my laptop has svideo or vga connector, some have Hdmi which is the newest, but the tv and laptop have to bot have the same connectors, it may be a dvi, or any that I mentioned, then you need a cable for your video, and another for your audio, both the audio and video cables are run to the tv, the only one that has both audio and video is the HDMI which tv's from the last hear or 2 usually do have. Then depending which input the laptop is using which it will tell you where the connection for the tv is, you set it to that input and that turns your tv into a giant monitor

No signal

Weegee, Unfortunately you are trying to mix two different video types: VGA is an analog video interface found on most computers (except for latest with flat panel monitors, which are usually DVI). Your TV DVI interface is digital (although there is a DVI-A, which is an anlog DVI interface, it is unlikely that your TV has this). So, what you are trying to do probably won't work. I assume your computer does not have DVI output (otherwise you wouldn't have bought the adapter), but some monitors have VGA inputs; does yours? What kind of DVI adapter did you get? Is a DVI-A? Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvi for info on DVI interfaces.
