SOURCE: Battery depleted

Sounds like the battery might be defective/worn out. If it's AA batteries (a.k.a. R6) try with a pair of good-quality alkaline batteries to see if it works then. Cheap batteries often doesn't have enogh "umph" to power cameras.

SOURCE: why does my camera say batteries depleted

As a workaround, you need to take out the memory card and take our the batteries as well. let it stay out for like 15 minutes and then put everything back. Or you can try using new and fresh batteries.

This commonly happens if you are using alkaline batteries. You need to use a high capacity NiMH rechargeables for better solution.

I have the same problem with my Coolpix L100. On 27 December 2010 after taking a few shots with flash, using rechargable batteries for one year, it displayed in Hungarian that the batteries are depleted, but after I have recharged them, the camera did not start again anymore, displaying in continue that the batteries are depleted, and it turn off itself after a few seconds. I think that the problem is with the sensor of the camera that should measure the battery status, because even if I had new batteries it desplayed an icon with half battery but I never let it depleted totally so far. Now I am wondering if NIKON will offer free service for it as I have bought it just about 16 months ago in the Romanian DOMO market chain.

The camera turns on and immediately turns off. no warning signs!! just stopped working. is there any way i could format it or send it in somewhere? its practically brand new!!

It sounds like depleted batteries. If you've replaced the batteries, then you may want to pursue warranty replacement. A high Mega-Pixel camera like yours will drain batteries quickly.

S40 Battery problem

Alkaline batteries are not capable of outputting the level of power required for your camera to operate. Your daughter's camera may have lower requirements and be able to function properly using alkaline batteries. Your standard alkaline battery outputs about 700 milliamps of power when they are brand new. A rechargeable NiMH battery can range from 1200 to 2700 or even 3200 milliamps max power output depending on the quality of the battery. Most compact digital cameras that accept AA style batteries are designed for these high-output rechargeables and will not function for very long even on fresh Alkaline batteries. Optio S40 Battery issues

I've had this problem. The S40 is *really* picky about good connections for the contacts to the batteries. Make sure you use a facial tissue or something similar to wipe off the ends of the batteries to take off as much finger oil or what have you. Then when the batteries are inserted into the camera, spin them around a couple of times to ensure that contacts have a good connection then wipe the tops of the batteries again and close the battery cover. I've had the same problem with NiMH batteries that I've had no problems with *ever* in other digital cameras and game boys. It probably has something to do with the small prongs that pentax uses on the battery contacts.
