It must be a permanent do-it-yourselves fix? Replacing some components? Not a BIOS fault?

  • hkvifte Nov 20, 2009

All vents are free from dust, unit has been unplugged for 24 hours. I doubt it's a heat issue. Any other ideas? Any ways to test for diagnosis?

  • hkvifte Nov 21, 2009

PS3 goes amber, then blinking red and beeping 3 secs after turning power on. I have opened up the unit and vacuumed all interior and replaced the thermal paste between CPUs and heatpipe. Starting up after reassembly the same problem presists. Any good idea?

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The issue arises due to overheat of the console, failing fan, dust and the system is not cooled correctly. Some of the connections under the chip are not making good contact and this problem is caused by excessive heat. So ps3 needs to be open and the motherboard or whole PS 3 needs reflow and new thermal compound to dissipate the heat better. The blinking red light indicates an overheating of the console. Probably a fan is failing or full of dust and the system isn't cooled correctly. Or you are blocking important air intakes. The console detects the high temperature and shuts off.

The three beeps signal, that the console is forcefully ending an application to turn the console off safely. So while the beeping is normal, the red blinking light and the cause thereof is not.

Try to clean the console with compressed air spray, or have it serviced by Sony, if you are sure the PS3 has enough "breathing room".

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

This is caused by overheating. vacuum the vents on it and make sure there is adequate ventalation to it. If it is in a cabinet leave the door open when in use. It is best to give about 8 inches on top, both sides, and back of unit.

If the red light blinks and it beeps then this indicates it is overheating

The first thing you need to do is make sure the PS3 is not on carpet or on top of anything else giving off heat, also make sure all the air vents are free from dust, use a small vaccuum for this with a brush attatchment and give them a good cleaning. Leave the PS3 unplugged and off for 24 hours, this will reset it if its overheated. The overheating problem will cause the CPU boards to melt where they are fused together

Okay, My indications and profeesional service would point at a overheat is why this is doing this. At one point the system overheated and now you got this error messages. What to do here:

1. If under warrenty do not hesistate any further BRING IT IN.
2. Out of warrenty you can get it fixed for under $150 USD by a professional like me, I cannot do it because of a contract I have with Fixya provents me from outside work on Fixya.
3. Do it yourself here is what you can TRY open it up take all the heatsync off buy some thermal conpound put a dap on each waffer toward the middle do not spread it with your thumbs or fingers let the heat sych do that. Put it all back togeather and turn it on if the error goes away your fix will only last 3 to 6 months until you have to do it again.

if that does not work you will need to have the motherboard replaced.

Thanks and do click the end session button.

First make sure your PS3 is powered off and unplugged.
1. Plug your PS3 in.
2. Now hold you power button on the ps3 down, you will hear one beep, followed by another 5 seconds later, and a third one 5 seconds after that. After that the PS3 power light will turn red. You can now let go of the button.
3. Hold your power button down again, you will hear one beap, followed by another beep 5 seconds later, and then you will hear a double beep 5 seconds after that. After you hear the double beep, let go of the power button.
4. Now some words will come up on the screen saying to connect your controller.
5. You must connect your USB cord to your ps3 and connect the other end to your controller.
6. A selection menu will now appear.
7. Select the option "3. Restore File System" and press X.
8. Now follow the on screen dialog and once the restoration has completed your PS3 will be back to normal.

Please note: Following this guide will leave your Game Data and Save Files intact, you do not need to worry about this process deleting your Save Files or any other data. Your ps3 will be just like it was before it messed up.

Hi, you may try the recovery options: The PS3 stores a copy of firmware drivers on the hard-drive and will reload any corrupt files. To access the recovery menu, do this: Make sure the PS3 is turned off Press and hold the power button on the PS3 it will power on then power off. When it's off press and hold the power button again until you hear two consecutive beeps. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try) It will ask for the controller to be connected via the USB cable, Turn on the controller and you will have access to the menu. Be aware that you might lose all of your previously saved data.
This should work only if you didn't see a yellow led light, before the red blinking. If the recovery doesn't work and/or if you've seen the yellow light then you have to call sony technical support. Regards, Peter

My Ps3 is sending off a sequence of colored lights blinking and shut off.

Try to do #3 or #5 option of the recovery menu. Follow this guide.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} HOW TO GO TO THE RECOVERY MENU OF PS3 SYSTEM

1. Make sure the ps3 is plugged in (stand by mode).
2. Put out your usb cable for the controller and the controller itself (do not connect yet).
3. Hold down power firmly, ps3 will turn on and then turn off, release power button when t turns off.
4. Hold down power again, you will hear a beep and then a double beep, when you hear that double beep release the power button.
5. Now you should be seeing something in your monitor that say "Connect usb controller", do just that.
6. After connecting the controller press PS button.
7. You are now in the recovery menu.
8. To fix the problem of corrupt data you can choose #3.
9. If you want to format your hard drive choose #5. Be aware that this option will delete everything that is in your hard drive.
10. Remember that doing #3 and #5 is not 100% to fix the problem of corrupt data, I say about 70%.

Good luck!

Ps3 shuts off on its own

This is happening because your console is not recognizing the HDD (hard drive) for what ever reason. A corrupted file is about to do damage to your console, and a PS3 will not turn on if it thinks further damage will occur. Here are two things you can do;
1. Try accessing the HDD reset menu. Here's how you do this: With a solid red light showing, hold down both the power & eject buttons. You're going to hear a single beep, then a double beep. Once you hear the double beep, release both buttons. You'll get a message on your TV saying "connect your controller using USB". Following all the instructions will lead you to a 6 item menu. You are going to choose number 3. If that option doesn't work, pick number 6. BE WARNED!!! Number 6 will delete ALL of your saved memory! I know that really sucks, but this may be the only way to save your console short of repair.
If none of this works, or the console just won't let you do the "double button" thing, it'll need to be repaired. You can contact PSR repairs at www.psr1.com. They are really great! They do both warranty & non-warranty repair work for a very decent price. I hope I helped. Good luck.
