a patch is coming out the 8th of jan, this tuesday to fix it i spoke to sony yesterday and they assured me it would fix it, and thats why they didn't send out a new unit. wait till tuesday, download patch and hopefully this will sort it. if not return it to where you got it from or phone sony as it has 1 year warranty. and their service is very good just make sure you back up game saves and other data. hope this helps you

You can back up ANYTHING you wish to keep via the backup utility what I'm about to tell you to do will essentially erase your harddrive. After backing up any data you wish to keep, restore your PS3 system and to a FULL ( not quick ) format of your harddrive ( this will probably take a couple of hours ). After that, if it still doesn't work call SONY.
Hope that helps..........

SOURCE: ps3 not reading any disc
what you have to do is turn it on and go on to settings. then format the system and wait for it to reset then start it up again and try it. (back up your info first!)
if that doesnt work ring sony and state the problem they should send you a new or refurbished ps3. but you'll need it in warrenty.

SOURCE: ps3 wont read disks
If YOUR WARRANTY IS UP. taking the ps3 apart is easy as long as you have the rght screw drivers. getting the plate off is the hardest part. there is a hex screw under the warranty sticker. after removing the screw, simply slide the plate down and it will pull off. then there are about 8 philips head screws on the casing itself. after removing these screws the top is hinged on the front side of the system... lift the back untin it is at a 90 degree angle and and remove the flat wire that goes to the SDcard slots by lifting the black flapwith your fingernail, then the top is removed. at this point the disk drive is no longe fastened by any screws of clips. pull the plug from the left side toward the front out to diconnect that set of wires. then there is a big flat silver strip connected to the bottom of the drive. once again lift the black flap to release this strip.now you are ready to open the drive itself. there are 2 silver screws on the bottom rear of te drive and 3 black ones at the front. you will need a very small philips head screwdriver for these. then the gray casing will come off. thelense is not exposed yet. there are still 5 or 6 tiny black screws on the top of the drive that will remove the black plastic case THERE ARE 2 TINY WIRES COVERED BY TAPE BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO PULL ON THESE WHEN TAKING THE BLACK COVER OFF
. now the lenseis exposed. simply clean it with rubbing alcohol and q-tips and reassemble the machine. BE SURE NOT TO GET ANY OF THE WIRES PINCHED WHEN SETTING THE DRIVE BACK IN PLACE AND DONT FORGET THE LITTLE METAL GROUND ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE DISK DRIVE. SOURCE: PS3 stopped reading PS3 games
This is most likely do to a previous freeze up while on the PS3. All you have to do is to first disconnect all of the plugs and wires. Then you put them back in and turn on the PS3. It should read your PS3 game discs.
