Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

External Hard Dive suddenly not detected

I have a Western Digital External Hard Drive (My Book) that my PC suddenly won't recognise. When I connect the HD via usb 2.0 there is a loud clicking sound followed by some whirring. This happens three or four times then stops. Device Manager on PC says no drivers detected. Had WD Drive for about five or six years. Running Windows XP.

Thanks for any advice.

    Hello Damilare,

Many thanks for your response and advice. I kept on disconnecting and then connecting the external drive and suddenly it was recognised by my PC, despite all the clicking an whirring! I have now copied the contents on to a new external drive so my data is, once again, safely backed up.

That said, I may, for the hell of it, follow up your suggestions at some point. If I do I will certainly let you know the outcome. For now, many thanks once again.

    With much appreciation,

From what I can deduce here, it seems that you the hard drive probably has a bad sector on it.

That clicking sound that you are hearing from the Hard Drive is coming from the read/write head inside the hard drive.

In this case, what I would advise you to do is, unscrew the hard drive case and remove the Hard disk from the case, connect it directly to a system, not externally or through USB this time around, then get a software called NTFS DOS Professional. It is a software that works like magic when it comes to hard drive repairs.

If you know any other hard drive utility, apart from this, you can also use it. I just recommend this personally because that is what I use.

Insert it into your PC, start up your CD-ROM and let your system boot from CD-ROM.

It works through DOS, and it should be able to help you with it.

If this does not solve the problem, then I'm afraid you might need to replace the hard drive.

And if it repairs it, I would suggest that you just retrieve all your valuable files from it and don't fully rely on the hard drive again because of the hardware error it has developed. Just keep using it as a second.

If you cannot do this by yourself, just get a very good technician to do it for you instead.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem.

Hope it helps.

    Hello JW_Leader,

I feel very happy to hear that.

Although you forgot to cast your vote. :)

Once again, as I've said, it is better not to rely on the hard drive again and just use it to store files that are not VERY important.

Because its an indication of an impending total failure.

Once again, let me know how it goes.

Good luck and have a nice week ahead.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

Hard Drive not recognised

If you are trying this on XP or other Windows OS, find out if it gets detected or not. you will find a icon below in your desktop

If this icon is on your taskbar and you are still not able to find the drive then you might need to manually configure the drive and partition in your computer management.

To go to computer management and assign drive letter to your drive detected follow below

go to start->control panel-> administrative tools->computer management-> locate disk management-> on the right side pane you might find detected hard drive but no drive letter-> right click the drive and select change drive letter and path->click on add->from assign the following drive letter select a drive-> click ok-> and your new drive will be assigned a drive letter and you can access your drive.

Below are the screenshots to do it. Hope this helps

Hello Klpook, Hi, 1. scan your PC with an antivirus software, if the action failed to work, 2. use another PC to check if your Hard drive is good. if the other PC failed to detect you hard drive. 3. Use Hard drive utilities, such as Disk manager for Western Digital to diagnose your HD. If by chance no positive work is done. Your drive is bad.

Western Digital hard drive

If this is an external hard drive, what has happened is the USB interface has actually malfunctioned. I had a similar problem with a Seagate one.

If your computer is SATA capable with your present hard drive, what you have to do is actually remove the casing of the external hard drive until you come to the physical drive. It is a SATA hard drive. I removed the casing off mine because the USB interface all of a sudden died.

When I did this and plugged it into my computer, it recognized it immediately and had all of my files there. As long as none of the folders were encrypted, this goes on without a hitch.

Just take your time in removing the casing and you will be fine.

Is my harddrive broken?

Unfortunately it may be that way Jake. The funny sounds may be from the needle on the hdd. Seek out a local computer store and ask them to troubleshoot it. Unfortunately I think it may be broken.

Not recognised malfunction

Sounds like your drive may be faulty with the rattling - if I were you I'd back up everything off it pretty quickly, then send the drive back to western Digital if under warranty. I wouldnt open it otherwise your warranty will almost certainly be void.
