What has always worked for me is using Gunk engine cleaner for the outside with a pressure nozzle on the garden hose. As for the inside, thoroughly spray clean the carb while it's running at hi rpm. It not only cleans the carb but the combustion chamber as well. After the cleaning is done, remove the spark plug and liberally spray a quality oil inside the chamber. This will prevent rusting and other sticking of parts inside.

It starts, runs, but after a few minutes it shuts itself off...any ideas why?

Look first for a plugged fuel line that is restricting the fuel from reaching the carburetor. There is usually a screen filter in the tank and inline filter in the hose and sometimes a filter at the connection to the carburetor. Disconnect fuel hose at the carburetor and opening shutoff valve confirm fuel freely flows from tank.

Old residual fuel can plug the filters because of the ethonal additive.
If fuel line is clear try maintaining the running condition by holding the choke in the partial choke position. Many of these units have a choke that you set and as the engine runs the choke slowly backs off. By retaining the choke on position and the engine continues to run is an indication that the engine is running lean,

This is likely a result of residual fuel evaporating and leaving residue behind in the carburetor. This residue coats the fuel passages and restricts the fuel air mixture resulting in the engine running lean. Maintaining the partial choke compensates for the lean mixture and the engine will continue to run.
To correct for this remove all fuel from the engine. Some unleaded fuel is available from the hardware stores($$) but will help to clean out the carburetor. I have found that by running clean fuel through the machines the carburetor in time will likely clean itself.

Next step if after some run time the unit doesn't improve is to add a carburetor cleaner into the gas. Try again running the unit until engine running condition improves.

If there has been some improvement but the engine is hunting not running smooth than an adjustment to the fuel mix screw on the carburetor will help. Record the position of the adjustment and open 1/4 turn max listening for engine to settle down. The adjustment may need to be returned to the initial position after running as the fuel passages continue to clean out.

If all is well then I would in the future follow manufactures storage procedures.

Last resort is to clean out the carburetor. I do not recommend this unless you have additional skill. It is easy to damage the assembly.

If all goes well then the link provides more advice then you will ever need.

I empty all gas from mine and change the oil after every use. I have sprayed WD40 in carb before storage. I use mind only for power failures.

What do I need to do after 10 years of storage. To put a 1992 Sea Doo in water?

Change fluids, Check hull for bouyancy flaws, replace plugs, clean carbs or rebuild them. Most old engines get gummed up after long term storage if the fuel was not completely drained. Another possibility is that the bearings may be damaged from years of condensation and and drying. It happens sometimes and sometimes you just get lucky. Had a ducati paso 750 that blew the race on the bearings because they were deteriorated after years of storage in climate controlled space. Was fine then one day the bearings came apart in the engine and chewed it up.

Ariens st24e leaking gas from carb body

As you said, it's probably got a stuck float. If stored without draining and fuel petcock turned off, gas evaporates from carb bowl and sticks float down, allowing fuel to flow all the time.

Solution: Remove carb and fully clean. Carb dip can be effective if left long enough but it will not clean out totally closed-up holes or clogged passages. Cleaners can only dissolve varnish if they can get to it and totally clogged passages won't allow cleaner to flow to where it's needed. Pros use a hot bath of cleaner and/or ultrasonic cleaners.

Start with a carburetor rebuild kit and use as many parts as necessary. Be careful to remove rubber parts like O-rings and gaskets before cleaning with solvents. Adjust mixture screws to factory recommendations and fine tune after you get it running. Good idea to purchase an engine service manual for you particular engine.

Ferrari 328GTS 1986. Has been in storage. Fully charged battery but when turn on ignition it just clicks then nothing. Any advice appreciated. Thanks Alan

Since it has be sitting in storage suggest you start out by cleaning the barttery cable ends. Then try to start it. If you are still just getting clicks then try a jump start. If it still won't start, then take the fan belt off and make sure that the engine will turn by hand - with a large socket wrench that is! If it will turn by hand, it is in your starting circuit, either a weak solenoid or bad starter. If it doesn't turn then it is internal to the engine.

The bike won't start after winter storage but the battery is good so, I assume that I need to clean the carbulater.

Next storage cycle, add some fuel stabilizer to the remaining gas; works well. Try giving the engine a shot of engine starting fluid (ether). Buy it at any parts store or most department stores.

I can get the engine started with the aid of the choke but cannot get the engine to rev at all. the engine just stops at anything near 2000 rpm. have had both carb stripped down and cleaned as the bike has...

Hi Roy ,

Your bike has been sitting in storage and the fuel is too old ad is stale by now .
Re open the carby , clean it properly with new fuel , all the jets need to be inspected for dirt or residue left by the old fuel , drain all the fuel out of the tank and replace it by new fuel .
The old fuel leaves a deposit film which needs to be clean so the best way is to pour a little fuel into your tank , shake the tank to clean it and drain it again .
Make sure that all gasket in the carby are clean or new as extra air intake will make the bike run rough .
Try all this and you will see that the bike will run better .

'79 Chevy van has been in storage for five years. How do I get it running again?

Start by cleaning the fuel tank (water from condensation accumulates in it), clean the fuel lines, clean and adjust the carburettor, drain the old oil, remove the sparkplugs, put some fine oil in the cylinders and crank the engine manually, put new oil,oil filter, sparkplugs, distributor cap and air filter, replace the water and start the engine. Check for leaks, run the engine for an hour followed by an oil engine cleaner.

My 1993 Honda Knighthawk wont run.

The slow circuit of your carbs are dirty. you need to remove the carbs from the bike and thoroughly clean the internal passageways and jets. that should solve the problem. Always drain your carbs for storage and use fresh gas when you start up after long storage.

Step3Allow the refrigerator and to defrost. This will melt any large blocks of ice that have accumulated in the ice maker
.
Clean the Ice Machine

Step1Remove the ice machine storage tray.
Step2Dump any water in the ice machine storage tray.
Step3Wash the ice machine storage tray using warm, soapy water. Rinse and allow to dry completely.
Step4Sanitize the lines of the ice maker. Consult your manufacturer's
directions for steps to do this, because it's not available on all models.

Reassemble the Ice Maker

Step1Replace the ice machine storage tray.
Step2Plug the refrigerator into the outlet to restore power.
Step3Lower the internal power bar located just above the ice machine storage tray. This allows the ice machine to make new ice.
