You open the front door and pull out the drum and toner assembly and then press the blue lever to release the toner from the drum, place the new toner in the holder and install both together into the machine.

SOURCE: Brother MCF-7340 first time toner replacement

If it is your first toner replacement you shsould only need the TN-360, as the drum should be good for about 12,000 copies. The machine will tell you when you are getting close to replaceing drum unit.

How to extend the life of a TN-330 drum kit for MFC-7840W Wireless Printer

If you have received any of the following messages on your Brother MFC-7840W wireless multifunction printer while utilizing the TN-330 drum kit then you may not have to replace your drum, at least not yet.

Drum End Soon
Drum Error
Toner Life End
Toner Low

I had this issue happen to me about 150 pages ago (some text, some pictures) and I still haven't replaced my drum after I executed this little trick.

Take your drum kit out of your printer (make sure you turn off and unplug any cables first)

Take some black electrical tape and cut a inch by inch square off.

Place the black tape over the optical port as shown in the picture below.

Then put the drum back into the printer, cable everything back up and turn the power on.

Your drum should last a long time beyond what was supposed to be a low toner.

Hopes this saves you some money.

Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

How do you reset the toner?

Brother toners don't have chips to start a page countdown like most printers. Instead, they use an ocular device that basically "looks" at the toner through a clear hole in the sides and if the beam goes through the cartridge to the other side, it tells you its empty. If you know there is still toner in your cartridge (TN-330 or TN-360 in your case) you can fix it by simply putting a piece of electric tape (or any other non-transparent tape) over the holes. To the printer that will look like a full cartridge. Look on the side of the cartridge; toward the very bottom and center you should see a hole in the plastic. That is what you need to cover. If you want, you can also cover the actual device on the printer, and since its a piece of tape there's no risk of damaging anything, but that is harder to find. Cover it up and give it a go. That should let you print untill the very end of the cartridge, at which time you will see the print quality start to fade.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

I have MFC-7340 Brother Printer but I have refilled the toner but the error TOENR LIFE END . Why?

Open the front cover.
Press the clear/back button.
It'll ask if you want to replace the drum, but ignore that and just press *11 quickly. It should say "Accepted" on the LCD. Close the cover and it should work.

Just bought a Brother MFC-7340 but there is toner all over the printed pages. Is it possible the drum and/or toner supplied was damaged?

yes. that is possible. if the machine was jossled around, the toner contained in the drum unit could leak out between the connecting points of the toner and drum unit. May cleaer it self up, or may not.

If this model comes with the drum separately of the cartridge, only replace the cartridge. There's no need to change it every time. until prints start to get lines or dots. Don't expose the drum to light too much.
