Question about Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

I installed a Hunter 44860 digital programmable T-stat on a single zone heat pump system. During the summer it was fine and the AC was cold. When winter came, the heat would blow cool. A friend switched a wire for the reversing valve and the heat was great. Summer came and the AC blew hot. I changed the wire again and it was fine. Now winter is here and the heat is cold... reversed the wire and now the AC is hot. Is there a solution to this? Does this t-stat support both?

The problem seems to be that there are terminals for both O and B but only one wire. The old stat was wired to O. If the reversing valve wire is attached to one terminal or the other, that side (hot or cold) works fine, but when the system switches to heat (from AC) or AC (from heat) I have to move that wire again accordingly.

Single zone means there is only one valve for the thermostat to control for hot, and one to control for cold.
The thermostat you selected is not correct.
It is not for single zone heat pumps.
If you would like me to do additional research on the correct valve - please post.

Thanks!!

Hello. yes, the 44860 does support both. here is a copy of the manual for your tstat. http://www.hunterfan.com/uploadedFiles/Support/Downloads/44002(1).pdf?n=3696
Check all of the wires again, it appears that you merely have a couple wires reversed. good luck. regards, Joe

I have an old Bryant heat pump. I got a Hunter 44860 2 stage heat/2 stage cool but I am having problems with the wires. These is the Bryant set up (the wire colors do not match)...

This should help you. You need to know if your thermostat is powered by the unit or independently and which way your reversing valve switches (I,m not sure on a Bryant, but probably Your old O wire goes to your new O terminal. They should pretty much match up, the new stat just has more options. Thermostat wiring

Why won't our blower turn off?

Hi,
It seems that you have the emergency heat running all the time. On some t-stats there is a switch that runs the emergency heat all the time.
The other thing that could be happening is that the out door unit is stuck in defrost so the backup heat is trying to run any time you are in heating mode.
Without checking what is energizing the heat coils with an electric meter it is impossible to tell what exactly is going on.
I can tell you that I'm sure that it is related to the emergency heat, though and if you can shut off the breaker that runs that for now it will help you out till you can get it looked at futher.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Reversing valve wire kills either heat or AC

Your solution is throw that Hunter tsat away and get a good one. You need one with 2 stage heat 1 stage cool heat pump tstat. Heat pump tsta has w,y,o,g,w,rnad w2. Don,t buy one without this one it. I have been in this business 45 years and people are always getting sold the wrong tstat at Lowe or Home Depot. Those guys dont know jack about Tstats. Keep in touch Rus GOOD LUCK. Get the right tstat follow the letter on wiring and you wont have any problem.

"Hunter" says it all. Throw it out and buy a honeywell, robertshaw, or a white-rodgers. Hunter stats are notorious in the business as being problematic.

Hunter 44110 programmable thermostat not turning off ac

You may and an anolog stat and the old one was digital if so it won't work. Digital sends info to system anolog is just a set of points open or closed. Digital can carry tons of info to system like a computer. Like comparing a computer to a rock. Sorry but you need to go back to proper type stat.

Hunter thermastat, model 44860 not working

Is the compressor running? is the outside unit clean and free from debris? does this unit work in the heating mode during the winter, and is it still capable of that now.

Ruud heating/ac unit blowing only cold air in heating mode

Do you have gas or electric heat. If you have gas then you do not have a heat pump. You should in most cases have a red, yellow, white, and green wires coming to the thermostat. R should go to rc/rh G should go to green Y should go to Y and w should go to W. Also the switches on back should be switched to non heat pump and gas rather than electric. Hope this helps.

44860 thermostat won't activate in heat mode

I had the same set and problem. I had a RC wire which is the power to the AC. But didn't have an RH wire which is the power for the heat. To fix this just use the jumper wire and insert it in with the RC wire and hook it up to the RH. Fixed my problem.
