If you just want to add an additional hard drive, you need a master with the operating system & the additional drive as a slave. So the jumper on the HD should be set on S on the additional drive; CS cable select may also work, but not 2 masters. I don't know if that answers your question.

If you are using the older style hard drive, the main drive will be the master and the other the slave. The master has the pin up and down in the middle position and the slave should be the second to the last on the right when looking at it from the back. There should also be a diagram on the top of it. Double check me though, just going by memory. I know you are aware but.....make sure the computer is off and don't forget to plug in the power plug. The computer should "find" it on boot up and give it a name, probably D or E.

Jumper off will set the drive to slave. If you can connect both drives to the same ribbon cable with the master on the end & the slave to the second connector. Look at your bios as win is booting up to see if shows the drive as slave, you will not be able to copy windows as a operating system off of the drive, but should be able to copy files.

Good luck on your endevors.

If one of the jumpers shorts two pins and the other jumper is a single pin short, remove the two pin jumper. The single pin jumper should be located on the pin at the far upper right corner. should be set as a slave at that point.

external USB hard drives do not need to be jumpered, if your computer does not recognize the ext. drive probably it is because the enclosure is defective, when you connect the USB cable you should get the "ding-dong" connection sound.

If you think that your computer recognizes the hard drive then jumper it as "secondary" or "cable select" and install it INTERNALLY, then transfer your data, that will prove that there's a problem with the ext. enclosure.

One more thing, maybe the USB port you use is malfunctioning, try one that you know that works (assuming that you have other USB devices that work).

how many pins in that hard drve?..let me analyze to you this, if the hard is in front of you, you'll see the connection of the ide cable and power cable, then the jumper setting pins is in your left,am i right?..so the pins is figure like this, : : : ., is that right?..the first pin(from top to bottom)is the master, and second one, is the slave and the last is cable select..
