Sometimes the little chip on the cartridge lies, and these can't be refilled unless you change the chip as well or purchase a chip resetter.

My Canon Pixma MX850 has two black ink wells, one large and one small. During printing, the printer pulls from the large well first and so when it's empty, I can no longer print in black ink even though...

The small black tank is called "Photo Black Ink Cartridge" and is usually only sed when printing color pages or photos. There is no way to bypass that. Use the ********* ink since it is a cheaper cartridge judging by volume. Sets can be purchased on ebay for very low price. Link below:

Can you tell me where the ink cartridge is located in the cannon mx850? thank you!

Dear friend,

You can find the solution by downloading and reading the on-screen manual file of Canon PIXMA MX850 All-In-One InkJet Printer by clicking the link which I insert here.
In the opened web page, find Guides and Manuals section and under the explanation “MX850 series On-screen Manual (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/XP x64/2000)”, click on the mx850sosmwin100us.exe file link.
When you click the file link mentioned above, in the new opened page you will see “I Agree-Begin Download” button at the bottom. Please click on that button to download the file named mx850sosmwin100us.exe and save it. When you run it double click on it, or run the file during downloading directly it will install the “MX850 series On-screen Manual” software. You can fin its icon on your desktop or find the link in the startup programs menu.
When you run the installed on-screen manual program, click on the “User’s Guide” and on the next screen scroll down the left menu. Click on the “Replacing an Ink Tank” menu under the heading “Routine Maintenance”. You will find all the information you need.
You can use this on-screen manual for the other issues when you need help about your Canon PIXMA MX850 All-In-One InkJet Printer.
I hope it helps.
If you vote for the answer, this will help the others to see the solved similar problems.
Sincerely.

Hi, (MX850) My blue ink has stopped printing. I

Performing Maintenance:

Note :
Be sure to install the ink tanks in the correct order indicated by the label on the Print Head Holder. The machine will not print if an ink tank is installed in the incorrect position.
Step 1
Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern.

If lines are missing or if white streaks appear

Step 2
Print Head Cleaning.

If the problem is not resolved after performing Print Head Cleaning twice

After cleaning the Print Head, print and examine the nozzle check pattern (Step 1) again.

Step 3
Print Head Deep Cleaning.

If Print Head Deep Cleaning does not resolve the problem, turn off the machine and perform another Print Head Deep Cleaning after 24 hours. If the problem is still not resolved and if you are sure that the ink didn't run out, then the Print Head may be damaged. Contact your Canon service representative.

Hope this helps.
All the best.

Why does canon 860 pixma printer have 2 black ink tanks? only one seems to be used,

The big black tank is pigment based ink used mainly for printing text documents and copies and the smaller black is dye based ink used along with the color inks during photo printing.

Canon MX850. Print blank after ink changes. The black ink, PGBK-5, ran out so I replaced it with a cheap generic ink tank. But it didn't work, nothing print, not even color copy. I thought the ink is bad...

That is a common problem on all Canon printers, the purge assembly on the right where the printhead parks, has a pump inside and hoses that go to the filters and ink absorbers. When that unit goes out you need a replacement. A job best done in a shop. When the printhead is not cleaned and primed properly you get blank pages no matter how full the inks are.
