Trash compactor problem

The door is open about 2" and the unit is totally dead. I can see thru the crack that it appears the ram is stopped and about 2" still into the trash can.

Re: trash compactor problem

I have had this problem on my GE Monogram. The 'smasher' is near the bottom and does not move anymore, even though the motor is working.

What I did was to get a crowbar that would fit through the crack and hook the underneath side of the bottom plate. You also have to hold the switch so the motor runs with the door open and pull up on the plate until the drawer can be slide out. The trunnion nut (a plastic nut) was cracked. I replaced it 3 years ago, and it just cracked again. They now make it out of metal, so maybe it will last longer. Ordered it from

Re: trash compactor problem

Pull out the compactor. Remove the back panel. You will be able to lift the ram by hand. Have someone open the draw slowly once you do this. Then lower the ram. What has occurred is that the trunnion nut that is on the steel worm drive is stripped. It happens. Order and Buy a new nut. Re-install.

Check the upper limit switch, you may only have an issue with the contact arm to sense the rams position. Look there first before buying anything. Good Luck

Ge compactor stops after just starting

the running cycle for this type of trash compactor is a max of about 30secs. The fuller the bag is the shorter the cycle. However, if this is not how yours is running try checking to see if there is any trash stuck between the ram and the basket. Or make sure that the foot peddle is still staying in the "up" position.

GE profile trash compactor makes loud noise and pulsates

sounds like you have a bad ram bushing on unit... you will have to pull out and watch operation ...there is also a differential switch that tells unit when to stop that sometimes gets worn and needs replaced... it generally is at the top or on the side of bin ....most likely it is one of the two items that has failed...

My ge profile 15" compactor stopped compacting. I

The "wheel" has a cracked center that you can not see unless you take the whole gear off.( I am assuming the "wheel" is off the motor and should be driving the chain that goes to the side gears ) There is a tension washer looking thing that holds it on and you can force it off with a flat screwdriver. Once off, I'm sure you'll see the center of the gear( hex shaped) is not engaging the hex gear shaft for being broken somewhere. An appliance repair store should have that part for less than $50. Sure beats the $85 the service people start with for just a service call.

Compactor ram stuck partially down & door open 2 inches. How do I get the ram to go back up & get the door closed?

We just had this same problem. Your problem is most likely abroken plastic gear found at underneeath the bottom of the compactor. Pull out the compactor and turn it upside down. Remove the bottom panel and that is where we found the broken gear. We were able to retract the ram and open the drawer by manually turning the drive chain using an ajustable wrench. Clockwise is compact, counter clockwise is retract.

My KitchenAid trash compactor model KUCP021RBL1: cycle does't end

Most likely the motorwindings have been overheated after staying to long time in down position and trying to get up.
If there is a Emerson motor in your compactor than you will not find anything wrong most likely it is the winding of the motor, we have had this two times, changed the motor and the problem is solved.

Kind regards,

GE Profile trash compactor is stuck

This has happened a couple times to me and the fix is fairly simple. The problem is the trash ram is pushing down on the edge of the metal of the trash compartment because the door is partially open. The solution is to back-up the ram the the door will close.

To back-up the ram, you will need to pull the compactor out from under your cabinets and unplug it. Turn the compactor on it's side to expose the bottom. There is a plate on the bottom that covers the motor gears. Remove the plate and turn the large gear counter-clockwise to back-up the ram screws (at least this is how it works on my model works). The gears are a little greasy so you may need to add some after messing with the gears.

Good luck.

GE Profile compactor

Here is an assembly drawing of your compactor.. Please note item # 102 ( direction switch) ..That may be affecting the perfomance of your motor or your motor may have a dead spot on the windings.. Here is a link to a website for parts that coincide with this drawing.. There isn't an awful lot to a compactor in terms of hardware so good luck.. Hope this helps..
