I think you mean just format the hard drive if so insert your windows installation disk then select drive options and format the drive then install windows again. Formatting the drive will delete everything so if this isnt what you want dont do it. Hope this helps

I installed a new hard drive into a dell dimensions 2350 and I am trying to install windows xp from disc. it says "please wait while setup formats the partition" and the bar is at 2% for an hour?...

Hello,

First try selecting "Quick Format" when you get to the place where you format the drive.

If that fails there is a program called diskpart.exe in C:\Windows\System32. Put your drive in a functional computer.

To do this you have to know the size of your drive.

Run diskpart.exe. Then enter "List Disk".

This file YOUR drive in the list. You identify it by it's size. If the drive can not be identified by size then EXIT.

The enter "Select Disk A" where A is the NUMBER of YOUR drive from the list "List Disk" showed you.

WARNING! Under NO circumstance select disk 0!

Then enter "Clean".

Then take the drive and put it back in your computer.

It will make it through the XP installation process after that.

Hope this helps.

I USED MY FREE AGENT DESK EXTERNAL DRIVE 500GB ON MY MAC GOT A NEW DELL AND CONNECTED THE DRIVE...IT SHOWS UP BUT I CANNOT OPEN IT PLEASE HELP

if you still can see files on the Hard disk from MAC, then the reason of being unabe to explore your file from MS windows is that your hard was initialized by MAC with a format that windows cannot read.
move your data from external hard disk to your MAC then format your hard disk from windows OS with FAT32 format .this format is readable on both MAC and WINDOWS

I'm curious as to why you had it done before and need to do again. Being as you had it done before, I guess you found out you need to have a backup of your files, because once you format the disk EVERYTHING is gone. If whoever you had do it before used the disk you provided, you know it is possible then. I also assume you know how to use the setup disk - depending on how you answer the questions that come up, you either get to a place where you can delete the files and format the disk, or to a place where you can reinstall and/or fix the current installation. If you do know how to use the setup disk, but cannot get to the part where it will delete/format, then your drive may be bad. I occasionally can make them work by carefully cleaning the glass "eye" in the tray (carefully) by using a cotton swab, and be careful not to leave any tiny fibers. If that does not work, your drive may be bad.

I cant open local disk drive E.It says it needs formatting.

Hi there,
Try to chance the drive letter of E: to ex F:, If you do not use the drive letter F :O),

Go to Start- control panel- Administration- Computeradministration- Disk....(I have my computer in danish and here it writes Diskhåndtering, I do not know whats the name in english :O().- under this place you find all the drives you have on the computer right now, here you choose the drive E: and right click on that and choose chance drive letter. IF you want it back again you simply do the same again. :O)

Hope that helps
IF NOT then return here

The Drve most likley does not have a partition or it has one that is from Linux or Mac. Use the disk manager snap in and see if it sees the drive. If so then create a partition on the disk then windows will assign a drive letter and you can format it
