You may be able to install one of the Linux distributions on the machine to garner a few more years use from it. Go online and search for a distro that will support the type of hardware you have. Since Win-98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, getting replacements are impossible.

Linux is a very robust and stable operating system that supports all kinds of hardware. A big bonus is it is FREE and there are LOTS of free apps available that will do almost anything you want to do.

I have installed artista v3.0 software and dongle on a machine running Windows 98. When I open the software to run it says it cannot see the security device.

Dongle will not be recognized
NOTE - If you have encountered any of the following when installing your v5 BERNINA Embroidery Software:
After the computer reboot the screen will prompt for the new dongle but will NOT recognize it.
After the computer reboot the screen will prompt AND recognize the new dongle but never ask for or recognize the older dongle.
The software installation seems to complete but when attempting to open the program you will get the tool tips for a period of time then get taken back to your Desktop.
After rebooting the PC, you get an "error 7" message in the black DOS screen.
You may try one of the following (NOTE: Disconnect ALL USB devices from the computer EXCEPT for the version 5 dongle. If doing an update, attach the old dongle only when prompted):
1. If the version 5 software is installed, go to MY COMPUTER > Local Disk C: > Program Files > BERNINA > Embroidery Software > BIN folder and in the BIN folder will be a file called 'DATAGATHER' or 'DATAGATHER.EXE'. Locate this file and double-left click it to restart the 'verifying the security device' process and should finalize the brain transfer.
2. If step 1 was not successful, you will next need to try to run the REPAIR feature from the v5 install CD. To do this, reinsert the version 5 installation cd, and choose the REPAIR feature when you are asked to make a choice. Click NEXT and YES to finalize the REPAIR and restart the computer when prompted

Also doesn't look like it will run on Windows 98. It is SOOO Old! Version 5 won't anyway.

Windows wont start

Were you trying to install Windows? Is the Windows CD still in the drive? If so, take the disc out and reboot your computer. It should start up. If not, you may need to complete the installation/upgrade or repair that was started. Sometimes, with some versions you can about the installation. I think you may just need to remove the disc.

Trying to run my old HPP game in windows 7 but can't get compatability

There is a good chance that you won't be able to run that game on windows 7 with any sort of compatability mode. There is however another more advanced method that can be used to run very old games. You can set up a virtual machine on your windows 7 operating computer, and on this virtual machine install an earlier copy of windows, windows 98 for instance, which will run the game just fine.

To do this you need a copy of windows 98, thats the easy bit.

Then you need to download and install Windows Virtual PC and check your software compatibility. The download link can be found here.

Once you have Windows Virtual PC installed then you will need to set up your first virtual machine.
  • Start up the program
  • A wizard will pop up and help you through the creation of your first VM
  • Select "Create Virtual Machine" and then click Next
  • Select the Name For Your VM then click Next
  • Then from the drop down menu to the left select Windows 98 and click Next
  • Select "Using The Recommended Ram" then click Next
  • Select "A New Virtual Hard Disc" then click Next
  • My Suggestion is to leave these at Default, then click Next
  • Check over the details and click Finish.
That should see your first VM Setup. Now go to the Virtual PC Console, select the VM you just created and click start. You should see a window that pops up showing what appears to be a PC starting up. That is the virtual PC starting up just like your pc would. Starting up for the first time can take quite a while so be patient.

The VM should then display the message "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device".

It's at this point you need your copy of Windows 98, on you VM window you will see on the menu bar at the top of the window the drop down "CD" click on this and select your disc method, which CD drive the disc is in or if it's an ISO file select that option.

Once you have that selected then:
  • Press the space bar and the screen should change
  • Select boot from CD-ROM, press enter
  • Select Start Windows 98 Seyup from CD-Rom, press enter
  • Press Enter when promted to
  • Select Configure unallocated disc space, press enter
  • Select, "Yes, Enable large Hard Disc Support". press enter
  • Press Enter when promted, the VM will now restart
  • Repeat the first 3 steps
  • Setup should now be formatting your virtual hard drive
  • Press Enter when prompted
  • The Windows setup Wizard should now be running
  • Follow the wizard through and Windows will start installing
  • During this process the VM wil restart several times
  • Once the VM restarts and again promts to start from CD-Rom or Hard Drive, select Hard Drive, then press enter.
  • Once your VM starts up in Windows 98, proceed with the installation of the game and any other software it needs.
Once you've done all this you will have the perfect compatibilty platform set up for any old games you own, as it is Windows 98 not some mode stuck on the side of you version of windows.

This is quite a long and complicated method, but it will work and it will allow you to play just about any pre 2000 game going.

Windows wont start says file is missing or corrupt no disc drive to load cd rom, eeepc 1005ha

Try rebooting, tap F8 when splash screen appears ( just tap after the computer starts). When you see the multiboot menu come up, scroll down and choose "last Known Good Configuration". If this does not work, reboot and try "safe Mode", Run all your antivirus programs if you can.

MY LAPTOP IS DOING NOTHING BECAUSE MY C DRIVE IS FULL AND IT WONT LET ME DELETE ANYTHING.. IVE TRIED THE DISC CLEAN UP BUT I DONT GET ANY FREE SPACE, IVE BOUGHT AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE AND MY LAPTOP DOESNT...

If you don't care about your data and don't need to back anything up, you can reinstall windows straight from the disc you have. If you do care about your data, you'll have to hook up another drive. Unfortunately, it seems like your problems are beyond the point of just hooking up a drive and copying files.

I'll give you two parts. First, how to reinstall windows. Second, how to copy files. Once again, if you care about your data you should skip down to the second part now.

1. Put your windows cd into your drive and reboot. Your screen should pop up with a message that says "Press any key to boot to cd." If it does not, reboot again, and this time go to your Setup screen. This is usually done by pressing the "F2" key or "DEL" key initially upon booting. Once you are in your setup screen, you need to change the Boot order to go to CD before it goes to Hard Disk.

Once you've booted up to your cd, you will be run through a windows installer that will let you partition and reformat your computer to do a new installation of windows.

2. The best way to copy your files when your hard disk fails or you can't recognize drives is to run a live version of linux. Ubuntu is what I use. Don't be scared now! Linux is very user-friendly, graphical, and easy to navigate these days. You don't need to know any code to run it or use it. You will need to download Ubuntu Linux on another machine and burn the CD, as I assume your computer won't handle downloading and burning a cd image. Once you have your Ubuntu CD, all you do is reboot with it in your drive and choose to Try the live version of Ubuntu. This will not take up any hard drive space and it won't overwrite your files. Ubuntu will simply be running in your memory space and allow you to access your computer and external drive so you can backup your files.

Good luck!

Installing windows on acer notebook help

you cannot usually switch installed operating systems from computer to computer like that and still expect windows to boot, but with windows 98 it *might* work.

to install windows 98 on the usb drive, insert and boot from the windows 98 disk like you were to install it on that computer , and then, it should, before it formats any drives, give you a choice of what drive to format.

Reinstalling windows 98 o toshiba 420cdt laptop

You have two choices:
  • Convert your windows 98 cd into many boot floppies. Then install from floppy. There is a utility on the CD (although I can't remember its name. I think it's something like makedisk.exe) that when ran will prompt you for many floppies.
  • You can remove the hard drive drive from the laptop, and insert it into another desktop computer. You'll need a small adapter to do this, like the one found here:
  1. http://www.pccables.com/cgi-bin/orders6.cgi?action=Showitem&partno=00504&rsite=00504
  2. Once you have inserted the drive into another machine, you can now copy the files from the windows 98 cd to the hard drive.
  3. Now re-insert the drive back into the laptop, and boot from the floppy again. Once inside DOS, you can change directory to your windows98 cd files on the hard drive, and simply run setup.exe.
The second method takes a little longer, but will give you many other benefits, including never having to insert the cd to install a windows component again. Let me know how it goes.
