In you device manager uninstall any devices that are listed under USB. Reboot and let it rediscover all the devices.

You can download the software for this mouse at Microsoft's site for this mouse. Just select your version of Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit) and your language and it will download. Install that and see if that button does what you want. If not there is usually a configuration utility on the start menu or in the control panel that will let you customize it all the buttons to an insane degree.

Side note: if you're not sure if you're using 32 or 64-bit Windows go to start then right-click computer and select properties. On the window that comes up there is a line that says System type: which says which you have.

Microsoft wireless laser mouse 5000 trouble

Windows system restore will take your computer back to the settings it had before you first installed the mouse software. It should give you a list a restore points (dates) by date and by application that was installed on your computer over a period of months, possibly years (haven't tested that out yet). So everytime you install an application you have the option of undoing the install even if uninstall doesn't work. The beauty of it is that it doesn't change any of your documents, emails, personal data under your user files. I can only speak for Vista and windows7 OS. Can't rtemeber if XP has this - probably not.

Erratic pointing

After experiencing the same issue for a few frustrating hours, I read here the theory about the required distance accuracy between the sensor and the surface.I used to be able to use mice (any brand) on a simple piece of paper or directly on (wooden) surfaces. Not with this "laser mouse..." I was about to try the "tape-with-a-hole" solution, but before trying that I simply threw a heavy, thick magazine with a glossy back-cover on the table and tried again. Worked like a charm. The heaviness of the magazine (I think) lent the "flatness" which I believe is the real required solution. I'm not sure if the glossiness played a role here...

Installation problem

Go to your control panel and then click add remove programs. Uninstall your old mouse and keyboard programs and then try to install the Microsoft one again. That should fix your problem.
