Try to right click on my computer then properties select hardware then device manager select sound "+" sign right click on devices like ac97 or realtik high definition or what so ever it because it depends upon the hardware of your pc. right click on it then click enable.

I can't get the sound to work on my laptop, it is not muted and says it is on. Now what

If you are using Windows, you should check the "device manager", and verify that there are not any red x's or yellow !'s marked on any of the devices (specifically sound card). For Windows 7 or 8, I would also verify that the mixer (audio icon in bottom right corner of monitor) is not muted, also click on the word mixer, and verify that none of the individual applications are muted. You will also want to check that the sound is turned up on both your laptop and windows audio mixer (same icon in bottom right) .... usually these two should coincide with eachother, but that is not always the case. Also verify that the sound does not work for other sources (check web sites, windows media player etc... ) so that you can make sure this is not an issue with the specific application or a possible codec issue.

No sound

If you have the green bars, check with headphones. Then with a different pair of speakers. Make sure it is not muted. There is a device choice option in case you have more the one device driver installed.

No souds

is the mute button above the keyboard pressed? Are you running windows 7? Does the soundcard show up in your device manager? Also, on windows 7, the volume mixer provides separate channels for applications, rather than devices as in xp. Click the volume icon, open mixer, and check to see if the internet and other applications are muted. I use a DV6000 and this caused me trouble since this computer had a bad GPU that I fixed, which causes the ssound to stop working when it goes bad. The computer ended up being fine, I had simply forgot about the mixer.
If that doesn't work, try re-installing the sound drivers. If that doesn't work, you might have a faulty BGA (nvidia) chip, which will have to be reflown.

I am not getting any sound from desktop speakers..i have sony driver installed

Onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS
The BIOS Setup program is accessed by pressing the <F2> key after the Power-On Self-Test (POST) memory test begins and before the operating system boot begins. Go to the Advanced > Peripheral Configuration menu to make sure onboard audio is enabled.
Audio settings in the sound mixer are incorrect
Check your audio mixer software to ensure audio is not muted or the volume level is not turned too low.
The speakers or headphones may be connected to the wrong jacks
Make sure you connect all speakers to the correct jacks. If you connect them to line-in or microphone jacks, they won't work.
Audio drivers are not properly installed
Check Device Manager under the Sound, video and game controllers section for any errors associated with the audio driver. Reinstall the audio driver if necessary.
Audio to back panel is muted if front panel is connected
Check your audio mixer software for a setting that mutes back panel audio if you have plugged headphones into a front panel audio solution. Uncheck this setting to allow audio to both the back and front.
Sound Playback is set to wrong device
In Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices, go to the Audio tab. Check the default device for sound playback; there may be multiple selections. Select the desired device, either rear panel or front panel.

Go to control panel > sounds and audio devices and have a look in there or click on the advanced button for the audio mixer. in the mixer, go to options > properties and select all the devices, close that and then turn up the volume on the mixer.

I am attaching an external microphone and need to mute the internal mic. They both work and it echos. PLease help.

Adding a mike doesn't create echos/feedback. Windows? Version? Right click on speaker icon in lower right and go to recording device mixers, can mute and adjust level of sound sources, also microphone power and pre-amp. Telephones and other devices (laptops) with both input and output will feedback unless the input is "noise cancelling", so you will have to be much more careful with the placement of the external mike compared to using the built in mike.
