Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Fan works, but unit does not heat.

I have a General Electric Spacesaver Microwave Oven Model Nr:JVM250BV 001 This unit was built in July 1995. It is 1.4kw 120v 60 hz (residential unit)
Two other times it failed due to the WB27X608 diode. Fan works, but unit does not heat. One fourth glass of water remained cold after ninety(90) seconds of operation. I suspect it has the same problem again.Does this failure rate seem average to you or do you feel this is excessive? Prices have fallen significantly since I purchased this unit. Did I get a lemon? Do I have it repaired again or epurchase a new unit? What are your thoughts?

If the cost of the diode isn't prohibitive to you(normally max $15.00) and you like the oven, but when replacing get a diode with a higher break-down/operating voltage as this may be a problem, get one thats rated for 12,000volts or higher or even a commercial grade diode

It does everything except heatinig up food. Model # JVM 3660 SD 001

The magnetron is not working. This open it and check to see if it has a blown fuse. Some microwave would have seperate fuse for the heating power. If fuse is good. You may be able to get a used magnetron from another microwave. Somtimes pawn shops would sell microwave for 5 or ten dollars just because it doesnt have a turnplate inside.

Mircowave runs but doesn't heat and it has a load hum.

You may need a new microwave..however, the diode may be defective or the magnatron tube may need replacing,,The magnatron tube is only warranted for 5 years so it may be used up as the model is (10years)fairly old.

Heat doesn't come on in microwave

If you have the experience with discharging a capacitor and you have a (VOM) Volt Olm Meter. Unplug microwave, discharge capacitor, and check the resistance of the two thermal cut-off discs by removing the lead and set VOM to RX1. If you don't get a reading of zero, replace the discs. For part go to and enter your model number. If you found any of these suggestions helpful, please rate my solution. D. Lange

The top switch is not just for the light and the bottom one is not just for the fan. It is not safe to swap wires around. It's a wonder you didn't blow the fuse. All GEs come with an envelope inside that contains a wiring diagram. If the fuse is blown, the entire unit would be dead. If all the switches audibly click, they may be okay, but you also need to check for signs of melting or arcing on the terminals. If the switches are okay then the most liekly possibilites are the magnetron or a loose connection on the magnetron. I will not advise you to work in that area of the microwave. The voltages inside the microwave can be instantly lethal.
