Motherboard or Hard Drive problem

I have a DST failure when I had a diagnostic test and I was wondering if it was a problem with the motherboard or the Hard drive? How can you tell and test for it?

My system shut itself down. I downloaded drivers and rebuild, start-up was ok but got a message with about .....kernel...,uninstall any new programs installed, beginning to dump hard drive,...

System couldn't start-up again, when checked, nothing was found on the hard drive. Everything wiped off!! Had it rebuild again, then similar message, system shutdown, couldn't start up. Message, no rebut on hard drive.

Any help out there please. Is it the hard drive or motherboard problem?

Testing mother board:
1. remove memory:
if the mainboard produce long beep means good.
if not that is bad.
2. if produce long beeps then insert the memory.
3. if same happen.hear long beep. then clean or replace memory.

If your are sure evething is ok in the mboard; then you can test your drive:

Hard drive test:

1. first fixed well all the connection bet the HDD.
2. if work then ok, if not then,
3. replace other IDE cable/ sata cable and fixed well again.
4.if still thesame; then
5. examine your HDD , the circuit maybe shorted.

I did a diagnostic run and error message 2000-142 Hard drive dst test status 79 came up. what can I do to fix this problem

The dell diagnostic is an inbuilt tool that helps to identify the hardware failures...
This 0142 error occurs if the Hard drive has gone bad.. It is due to a hardware failure in the hard drive.. So toy have to replace it... If you have warranty on the computer you can call dell(18006249896).. If you dont have warranty then call any local computer shop and replace the hard drive

You'll have to make a backup of it before you reload. But I was wondering, if you have found via the diagnostics that a possible hardware component has failed why do you need to reload the OS?

Another thing to look for on this model of Dell is capacitors on the motherboard that may have become swollen or burst. Dell had a series of defective motherboards in this era, and your model is one of the ones affected.

Of course, if the motherboard has swollen caps, you'll have to replace it, unless somehow its still under warranty and then dell will send you a new one.

My laptop is a dell 6000 and it says there are no bootable devices

your hard drive has failed, on boot (dell splash screen) press f12 to bring up boot menu, choose diagnostics option, run this and it should confirm hard drive failure on dst short test (drive self test) and give an error code (e.g 2000 - 0142), trust me on this i am a dell field service engineer

Error code 0146 , can you help me ?

ALWAYS CHECK THE WARRANTY BEFORE DOING IT YOURSELF
If this is a Dell computer , it indicates a hard drive failure. if so here is the solution:
Look at the bios and see if the hard drive is detected.
To get to the BIOS, when you turn on the system, you will be confronted with a black screen with the dell symbol in the middle, if you look at the top left of the screen, you should see something like
Press F2 for boot options
Press F12 for setup
Keep tapping the F2 or F12 key for boot options. this will take you into the BIOS.
Check also that it says enabled
Next see if you can boot the dell diagnostics partition. {F12}, then select diagnostics, once you have the diagnostics available run the memory tests and the hard drive test.
you should get a report when it finishes looking something like this:
DST Short Test: Failed
Error Code: 1000-0146
Msg: Unit 2 : DST LOC Contains previous error(s)

READ TEST:
0F00: 0244
MSG Block: 57301297

VERIFY TEST:
0F00:1A44
MSG Block: 57301297
if there are more than two errors ide suggest a new hard drive. BUT TO SAVE YOUR DATA BEFORE ------>Do you have anything important? if you do, you will need to do a repair install of XP and get your files before the hard drive fails completely. Use the service tag to obtain full specs of the computer at dells website. This hard drive has previous errors, and has generated new ones. It looks like it is getting ready to fail. You may be able to use a xp disk to perform an operating system repair, the dell operating system CD will do this also. Here is a link: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm If you follow the directions exactly, you will not lose any files. Please continue to post about this issue, and operate this computer as little as possible.
