Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

Linux OS Right now I am trying to burn a live CD Linux from my desktop and try to see if I can boot from the disk and retrieve my files on my laptop.  Is this possible since I have DST failure on my laptop.  Can the disk override the system and retrieve my files or I still have to get a usb enclosure to house my old Hard Drive and get a new HD?

Re: Linux OS

You don't have to get a $50 enclosure. They sell the cables with a IDE /SATA on one end, and a USB on the other for about $10 on ebay.

As far as recovering it..

Did you try the usual chkdsk /r, etc?

Toshiba satellite M45-S169 won't boot ubuntu from DVD

Your really pushing the lower minimum requirement limits if you're trying to use Ubuntu 11 or Ubuntu 12. Especially with your on-board graphics chip which borrows system ram.

Try Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx) instead.

Go Here and download the 1st link on the list under Desktop CD:

Here is a direct link to the ISO file you need to download and then burn to a CD:

If you don't have Software for burning iso's to CD's then download and install this totally FREE CD Burning program:

My FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO PA 1538 screen comes black ? HELP

Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor and see if all is working Ok with that, if it is, then you may need to get the laptop display serviced - if it does the same on the external display, then try booting the laptop from a CD or DVD such as an OS install CD (Windows or Linux) or a boot utility CD such as Hiren's Boot CD - this will allow you to test whether the problem lays with your installed operating system or with the hardware. . . .
Note: do not go any further than the initial displays if using an OS install CD unless you are using a Linux Live boot CD which will not destroy your installed operating system. . . .See to download a copy of Hiren's Boot CD to burn to a CD. . . .See to download a copy of a Ubuntu (Linux) Live CD.

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, it boots to the windows logo, then black screen with cursor. I have tried to boot in safe mode to no avail same problem. Can you assit me please. Thank you...

instead of Safe Mode, have you tried Last Known Good Configuration from the boot menu?

If that doesn't work you may have corrupted windows system files.
You can rule out the hardware by downloading and burning a CD with a Linux Live system on it. That will boot into a Linux desktop without installing anything on your hard disk or overwriting your files. If that boots OK then you know that your windows system files are damaged and you may need to reload windows.

I'd like to install a version of Linux on my laptop. I am a beginner; what ill fit me and how to install it?

For a beginner the best version of Linux for a laptop remains UBUNTU. But you can count on LINUX MINT and the latest version of it is called JULIA.
You can find UBUNTU here. And LINUX MINT here.
The BOTH can be installed via installation DVD and for both also you can TRY BEFORE INSTALL, meaning you can run the version of LINUX LIVE, taste and test it before you will install it on your hard drive.

Hi, can not get start up discs to redo my computer. missing file preload.tag for Bootini is the message. Do I need to redo the bios or just get new start up discs? I have tried 6 times. Mike

Your redo disks should be damaged. Or your memory also could be damaged. In worst case, try to download the disk again from acer and burn it to a disk and try the new one. If it is not working yet, you should use a linux live disk to test your memory. If it is damaged, buy new memory RAM units and change it.

Ok I have a Gateway Laptop model NV73A06u and it is not powering on. The computer is no booting up correctly. I tries to start and then fails. The computer tries to fix itself for a long time and nothing...

Have you tried a Live CD?

Since you have a newer model, you can try the latest Ubuntu release located here.

Download the .iso file.

Burn the .iso file to a CD or DVD.

For burning .iso files to media, I like ImgBurn for Windows ( ) and plain K3B for Linux.

Once the disk is burned, pop it in and make your machine boot from the Optical Drive (CD/DVD Drive).

Hit enter a few times once you are asked about the preferred language and to try Ubuntu without changes to your computer.

From there it should either boot up okay (maybe without sound because sound is iffy in Linux) or it will continue to be all kinds of badness.

The thing is at this point you should be able to tell if it is most likely hardware or software. If Linux boots up off of your disk, your Windows installation is hosed (not so bad, possibly cheap to fix). If you can't even boot into a Linux live environment, then the fix may involve money and a fair amount of screwdriver action.

Blank screen

Most likely a very nasty virus.
Download and burn to a disk a Linux Live-Cd like  Then go into the BIOS and change the boot order - put the cd first. Now boot from the Linux disk and recover all your files. Next boot from your recovery disk and reinstall Windows.
And next time use a better antivirus.

I am trying to restore windows xp on my pc but when i went through the process of formatting the hard drive now windows will not install. Everytime it tries to install I get corrupted files. What am I...

To find if the problem is with the XP disk or the disk unit boot from a Linux Live-CD like
If you can boot and use without a problem the Linux disk then try using a different XP disk, the one you have now appears to be scratched or faded.

Acer 7720 will not boot

Do you want to try and see if a 'Linux LiveCD' boots? This is the way I test if the computer works. You burn this CD to a disk, and then boot off of it when you're computer starts. I will not modify anything on your computer as long as you go to 'Try Ubuntu with out installing'

Don't worry, I'm not trying to get you to install anything, just see if it boots into the 'live environment' (means you are running it off of the cd) If this works, that means that it is only your windows installation is messed up, and a reinstallation of windows should work fine with a Windows install CD NOT the recovery cd.
