Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

1 Answer

Linux OS Right now I am trying to burn a live CD Linux from my desktop and try to see if I can boot from the disk and retrieve my files on my laptop.  Is this possible since I have DST failure on my laptop.  Can the disk override the system and retrieve my files or I still have to get a usb enclosure to house my old Hard Drive and get a new HD?

You don't have to get a $50 enclosure. They sell the cables with a IDE /SATA on one end, and a USB on the other for about $10 on ebay.

As far as recovering it..

Did you try the usual chkdsk /r, etc?

You can always get into a Windows system by booting with a Linux "Live CD." You should be able to retrieve any files off the Win disk, assuming it hasn't been damaged or overwritten.

If you have access to another computer, download Knoppix or Linux Mint/Ubuntu and burn the iso image to a CD or DVD. Stick it in your harddrive, change the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive and ya should be in.

Linux usually does a better job of fixing Windows than Windows does.

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, it boots to the windows logo, then black screen with cursor. I have tried to boot in safe mode to no avail same problem. Can you assit me please. Thank you...

instead of Safe Mode, have you tried Last Known Good Configuration from the boot menu?

If that doesn't work you may have corrupted windows system files.
You can rule out the hardware by downloading and burning a CD with a Linux Live system on it. That will boot into a Linux desktop without installing anything on your hard disk or overwriting your files. If that boots OK then you know that your windows system files are damaged and you may need to reload windows.

I'd like to install a version of Linux on my laptop. I am a beginner; what ill fit me and how to install it?

For a beginner the best version of Linux for a laptop remains UBUNTU. But you can count on LINUX MINT and the latest version of it is called JULIA.
You can find UBUNTU here. And LINUX MINT here.
The BOTH can be installed via installation DVD and for both also you can TRY BEFORE INSTALL, meaning you can run the version of LINUX LIVE, taste and test it before you will install it on your hard drive.

Have you tried a Live CD?

Since you have a newer model, you can try the latest Ubuntu release located here.

Download the .iso file.

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Burn the .iso file to a CD or DVD.

For burning .iso files to media, I like ImgBurn for Windows ( http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=27810&t=4&i=1 ) and plain K3B for Linux.

Once the disk is burned, pop it in and make your machine boot from the Optical Drive (CD/DVD Drive).

Hit enter a few times once you are asked about the preferred language and to try Ubuntu without changes to your computer.

From there it should either boot up okay (maybe without sound because sound is iffy in Linux) or it will continue to be all kinds of badness.

The thing is at this point you should be able to tell if it is most likely hardware or software. If Linux boots up off of your disk, your Windows installation is hosed (not so bad, possibly cheap to fix). If you can't even boot into a Linux live environment, then the fix may involve money and a fair amount of screwdriver action.

Try the booting from the windows cd and repairing the os? if not working you may need a fresh install which means you will lose your data but your pc will still work. You can always download from www.ubuntu.com and burn the os to a cd rom and boot from cd, this will load a verison of linux, When cd rom starts chose RUN LIVE CD, this will not change the pc at all, when the os starts up you can go to places at the top and go through all your windows files and save the ones you want to keep to cd or external hd, then reistall windows, or who knows you might love linux and enjoy something thats free :)

To find if the problem is with the XP disk or the disk unit boot from a Linux Live-CD like http://www.pclinuxos.com/
If you can boot and use without a problem the Linux disk then try using a different XP disk, the one you have now appears to be scratched or faded.

How can i install Linux OS on my laptop? please help

do you want to have Linux while you are also having Windows? Then is will be a dual boot. To do this, have another partition of your hard disk empty. Like C (windows) and Drive E(free partition).
Download the latest version of ubuntu linux and use the bootable cd to install ubuntu on the other partition

Laptop won't boot. it starts and resets to same point all the time.

Most likely you have a virus and it has corrupted the boot files of the OS. Most likely you'll have to reformat the computer with your original OS disk and lose everything. Your only option for saving information would be to perhaps run a check disk and fix the errors or use a Linux Live CD and manually mount the hard drive to recover any data.
