All Maxtor hard disks has a diagram in them on where you should put your jumper if you need to set it as primary or secodary slave, etc. Just look closely at the label sticker.

SOURCE: Can not find Jumper diagram on N256 Maxtor model 33073H3

Hello there soggytundra, here's your GEEK-steer ...

Despite your question being posted here 5 days ago, I'll presume you still (and if not, then someone else will) need the answer ...

Virtually all Maxtor drives adhere to the following general rules concerning jumper settings (at least up until now):

= MASTER (M): Insert jumper over the FIRST COMPLETE pair of VERTICAL pins.

Examples:
Xoo o oXooo Xooo
Xoooo Xooo Xooo

= CABE SELECT (CS): Insert jumper over the SECOND COMPLETE pair of VERTICAL pins.

Examples:
oXo o oXooo oXoo
oXooo Xooo oXoo

= SLAVE (S): Do NOT insert ANY jumpers (or at least NONE VERTICALLY, but you may HORIZONTALLY across the TOP row as simply a means of storing the jumper).

Examples:
ooo o ooooo oooo oooXX oooXX ooXX
ooooo oooo oooo ooooo oooo oooo

TIP: As a general rule, if you KNOW the role of the jumper capable device you're installing, it is better to NOT use Cable Select (CS). In this case you do, therefore it would be best to specifically designate the (33073H3) drive as (secondary) Slave [and your other (primary) drive as Master].

Good luck and GOD-speed. Please post back if you have any further questions, and/or just to let me (and others in similar need) know how well this steers to solution.

SOURCE: I need the jumper settings for Maxtor N256 hard

Hard drives have three jumper settings on them.
1.MASTER---MA
2.SLAVE---SL
3 CABLE SELECT----CS

If you have a hard drive on the end (last) on the ribbon cable connectors, then it is the master drive, and should be jumpered as such-- the jumper should be on the MA pins, any drive in the middle of the cable is jumpered as slave and should be on the SL pins.
CS usually causes problems, and I do not use it.
There are no jumpers on the motherboard that need to be changed for the hard drive. The only other settings for the hard drive are in the BIOS.
Please vote 4 thumbs up!!,
James.

Jumper settings for a maxtor N256 master with slave

Select the maxtor HDD as master by setting the Jumper to the extreme left of the hdd; i.e. next to the data cable.
Remove all jumpers from the other HDD which you want to put as slave.

Maxtor HD

The second pair joined (jumper) I suspect it is configured as cable select.
J50 is the left-most pair, and joining them sets the drive as master.
