Question about Acer Aspire 5500 5570-2609 Laptop

1 Answer

My ACER 5100-4720 boots up with a black screen and after about 15 minutes it loads Windows Vista, but it is very sluggish, then it acts like it gets up to speed and still runs sluggish. I have 1GB DDR2, 120 GB HDD (I have 20% free space), Any suggestions? BC

I went through and did the following steps as you requested and the results.

The fan is running and I blew out the area to make sure no dust has been trapped. The fan is working properly.

Booted up system, pressed F8 to start in SAFE MODE with NETWORKING. The boot up process was still sluggish BUT wasn't as slow, I then ran the virus scan. The process was complete 3 hours later. I resated the PC and the boot process was still very slow. When booting up, it asked to "check for system problems and fix errors". "This may take several minutes". I clicked "yes".

The boot up process still ran very slow it didn't boot up in 5 minutes, So I turned off the PC.

I noticed the the laptop has 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD (BUT this has 20% free storage.), Runs VISTA OS. Can these be factors?

Where can I get a VISTA restore disk? (the laptop doesn't have one, the owner misplaced theirs).

    Thanks BC

I appreciate your help. Here is my results, I have tried the "ALT" F10" solution and the PC will not even pull it it up, it took a little while for the F8 function to start.I have noticed when I pull up the properties on the "C" drive I an showing a total of 51.1 GB capacity, with 36.2 GB used and 14.9 GB free that is a 20% free space. But the ACER is supposed to have 120HDD. I have ran the "safe mode with networking" and then did a virus scan. This afternoon I ran a disk clean up, and defrag again today. I have cleaned all the "cookies", "history", "passwords" and "Temp internet files", emptied the recycle bin.

It is still running slow and sluggish.

Anymore directions I am open to all suggestions.

    Thanks, BC

The first thing I would check is that the cpu fan is working. You should be able to see the fan come on from the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes the fans can stick from dust and dirt. Then the cpu will get very hot and cause the computer to slow way down. Try using a can of compressed air on the fan and see if it starts working. If the fan is working ok then you might have some type of virus or corrupted installation causing the computer to slow way down. You could try pressing F8 right before windows starts to load. This will bring up a boot menu. Then try booting the computer in safe mode with networking and see if it boots up fairly quickly. Once it boots up in safe mode run your virus scanning software to see if there are any viruses on your computer.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

You will need to contact Acer to get a factory restore replacement disc for your laptop. You can give them your model number and serial number then they will send you a replacement disc for a fee of course. You might be able to use another vista disc if one is available to restore the system. You will need to enter the correct product key for your installation(should be located at the bottom of the pc on a sticker). As far as 1 GB of ram that should be enough for Vista. It sounds to me like something has been corrupted causing windows to run extremely slow. I suggest to get all your important filles backed up and do a fresh installation of vista with a format of the drive. The format will erase everything but this way you will have a clean installation of Vista. Now I am assuming that this computer came with Vista and has a fast enough processor to run it. Anything under 1.2Ghz single core processor will be very slow with Vista. Some computers also have a hidden restore feature that you can use to restore the computer to factory settings. You usually press "alt" then "F10" to activate the hidden restore feature when the computer first turns on(at the bios screen display). If your computer has this then you can bring it back to factory settings without a recovery disc.

I looked up the specs on your computer and a AMD turion 64 should be able to run Vista fine. It appears that the computer came with Vista also.

I am going to bed. I will check back in the morning and see if the alt and f10 recovery works for you. remember to back up everything you do not want to lose before running the recovery(boot into safe mode if you need to get it working).

  • muebe Nov 20, 2009

So did the "alt" and "F10" bring up a factory retore menu? Also i was going to ask you does it speed up at all whne running plugged into to the power as opposed to just running on battery power?

It seems to me a full drive format and re-install is the only way to get this thing up and running. So you will either need to contact Acer and obtain a recovery disc from them(they will charge you for it) or if you know someone with a Vista disc you might be able to use their copy to re-install Vista and use the product key for your installation(found on the bottom of the computer) or buy a new version of Vista or better yet Windows 7(faster and more stable then Vista). Now it is possible that a hardware issue(like the harddrive, processor, or motherboard) could be causing the computer to run extremely slow. What you are describing to me sounds like a overheated CPU but you stated that the fan is working. So the next step is a complete format and re-installation of the OS. If it is still running slow after that then I would point to a hardware issue. 1 Gig of ram should be enough to run Vista and the processor should be ok also. If this computer originally was installed with Windows XP then it might not be powerful enough to run Vista well. Windows vista uses alot of CPU power and can strain an underpowered laptop. So I suggest formatting the hard drive and installing Vista,XP or Windows 7 and see if that works.

You will be happy with Windows 7. It works much faster than Vista. I have it on 3 of my computers.

Windows logon screen flashes for 6 minutes

After the 6 minutes, what happens? Does Windows finally load? Does it power OFF?
Let's assume Windows eventually does load. The problem wouldn't be the monitor, instead look at your boot devices. You "could" have a USB Flash drive installed on your computer and that may affect the boot process. Try removing any external USB drives from your computer and try booting again. If it does load quicker, you have to check the internal configuration / setup screens on your computer. There is a boot sequence or boot order sequence that needs to be altered.

You could need to wipe the system and re-load it. Depends on a lot of things. You might have malware. It could be one of the programs installed on your computer is acting up. What is your operating system? Windows XP? Vista? Windows 7?

When your computer is first booting, try tapping F12 to get to the boot menu. Once there, boot from the Vista installation disk- you may need to fully reinstall windows from that point. Try doing a repair first- if that does not work, do a full reinstall.

Acer Aspire 5050 Won't Boot.

Your problem could be windows vista isnot installed properly
i assume in the beginning, your laptop come with windows xp.
if you want to go back to windows xp, you can still use alt+f10, as long as you don't delete the recover partition.
Just boot and press Alt+F10, it'll give you recover screen.
